Re: suzuki 9.9 sudden death, help needed!

I have had a family emergency and have to leave the boat and all it's attendant delights for a couple of weeks. Did not get a chance to check the motor beforehand but thanks all for the help and I will post the results when i am able to get to it.

Did you check if there is spark when you pull start? If there isn't, I'd reset then spark plug connectors, check the safety interlock wiring and the neutra interlock wiring. Suggest procuring a service manual, it may have a troubleshooting workload to follow.

I would jump the starter and see if that works.

Could be your ignition switch.

Does it have a pull start?

My 2 bits. Usually something simple if it worked the day before. Don’t dig to deep.

Re: suzuki 9.9 sudden death, help needed!

Back on the boat and I am pretty sure you were right Captain Bob. Located the second neutral safety switch and found the metal activating leaf was on the wrong side of the yellow plastic part and the switch's plunger is missing. Its hard to see how that leaf could slip to the wrong side of that arm but it did. Nothing else is loose and I guess the leaf shifting is what sheared the plunger. Weird thing to happen but I think you were right so thanks again for the guidance.

If I can get to the wires for the switch easily I'll short them to test if the motor runs but will order a new switch anyway. Given the sudden onset and the lack of other possible signs it seemed likely it was an electrical failure and i'm pretty sure this was it. I will confirm once I get the new switch in.

I appreciate all the advice

It was the second neutral switch that had broken. Replaced it and the OB starts and runs perfectly. I would not have know that switch existed without your suggestion CaptainBill so thank you. Very much appreciated and saved me a lot of time.

And after a quick re-read of the replies I see that Avionics Joe was also correct in suggesting there was a second neutral switch. Thank you.
