recommendation for rebuilt carb

I have a 2005 Mercury 4 stroke 6 HP outboard and would like a recommendation for where to buy a rebuilt carb. Online prices start at around $29 and go to $400. Anyone have any experience with a place to get a good one?

Find a local shop that works on outboards and see if they have an old motor you can get the carb off of, and then have the shop rebuild it for you. Then have them rebuild your old one too. Pretty easy to do yourself too. Mostly the main problem areas are sticking or leaking floats and or the needle valve, and plugged jets. Take it apart and soak it first in carb cleaner, then blast any crud out of the jets with compressed air or even the little tube attached to a can of WD-40.

Re: recommendation for rebuilt carb

FWIW
For the 2 stroke version I purchased a carb for about $50 on Amazon. Chinese made. Worked fine, starts easy the first pull, and it was cheaper than the gaskets and rubber bits to rebuild one. You could buy 2 of them cheaper than rebuilding a single carb and have a spare.

Just be careful checking part numbers to be sure the carb you buy is indeed the correct carb for your engine.
