Starter relay for Yanmar 4JH3-TE

Starter relay on our Yanmar 4JH3-TE bailed out today, it is heavily corroded. Does anyone have the model number for this? This more looks like a solenoid than a relay and there are a variety of similar models around, I couldn't find anything in the manual.

Independently, we are in the middle of a cruise and I don't think I can find the right model around here. Would it be a major concern if I temporarily use a relay that I can find at an auto-store? I started the engine by short circuiting this to the solenoid. I need something that would take us to our home marina.

Re: Starter relay for Yanmar 4JH3-TE

Would using a 250A continuous relay like this not be a good idea?

Why not? the current draw is low and the demand by the starter solenoid is not very much either, certainly not 250 amps, in fact some of the JH3’s only had a relay if the long wiring harness was supplied, the “short harness” start wire went from the keyswitch directly to the SOL terminal on the starter motor. Definitely cheaper at $14 than the Yanmar original. You could even use one of those little Bosch cube relays, they work very reliably on bigger starter motors than your 4JH3

Re: Starter relay for Yanmar 4JH3-TE

Try Yanmar OEM 719575-77510 or 128990-77550 as part numbers in google.

Here is the wiring diagram extract from the 4JHE-TE manual

Yes you can use a 30 Amp solenoid from an Auto parts store as this relay does not carry the full starter motor current, only the starter solenoid pull in current.

I did exactly that for two months on my Yanmar 3JH5E until the OEM part arrived. I only replaced it with the OEM ($$) one to keep the system " original".

A relay remotely switches current, whereas a solenoid [typically] connects to a mechanical device, such as a valve, rod/shaft, or lever, which might divert [fuel] flow.
In practice, relays are solenoids, that move a set of electrical contacts, in order to switch an electrical circuit.

I couldn't even get my starter relay off. I replaced with a 12V car rely I got off Amazon for like $10 for 2 and it has been installed 5 years wit no problem. Wiring was a little different, but easy.
