I don't understand why the hose is not connected to a reservoir, like the one in the photo - you should fit one when you replace the lip seals.[/QUOTE]

Will do :-)

Re: Stuffing box problem

I’ve installed Tides Marine dripless shaft seal. At installation, I also installed 2 additional seals in ‘seal carrier’ housings. This puts new seals in place ready for replacing a leaking seal without hauling the boat.

Re: Stuffing box problem

Sometimes the best approach is to bypass the quick fix that may last for a season or maybe just a few short trips and do it right. This appears to be one of those problems that need more $$$ to make a reliable long term fix. The newer dripless seals may be relatively expensive but they last a long time and are problem free when installed correctly.

Re: Stuffing box problem

My Albin 25, 1973, with the Volvo MD3B, one more cylinder than your MD2B, has your bronze grease pocket type lub seal.
The Albin directions are to add soft grease to the pocket under the screw, no high pressure grease guns!
After a few days of can see it is down and I add maybe a few table spoons. Never had water run out of the pocket or a drip from the shaft seal.
Have seen a small grease container attached to others adding grease with a few turns of the cap.
Transmission oil I would think to be to light and run out the back.

Thank you Jordanbigel! I found that type of shaft seal in my 1977 Jaico Colin Archer (GRP) bought in Norway. I tried everything to find a manufacturer but failed.

It is very high on my replacement list!!

The principle is quite simple. There are two (or more) shaft seals on the shaft. Oil is between them. The reservoir is well above the water line. It gives a positive pressure against the water.
When the water side seal fails the oil level drops, but you have some time (days?) to repair it.
If the inside seal fails you will see oil.

Keeping spares should be easy. Just some shaft seals.

Re: Stuffing box problem

I replaced my old traditional stuffing box with a Volvo Penta dripless seal.

Very compact (saved a ton of room in my shaft bilge), simple as can be (no moving parts, no bellows, etc.), and totally dry bilge. Also, no need for a water cooling line to leak, break or whatever.

Shaft runs cool under power.

Very happy with mine.

These are dripless shaftseals.
No lubrication other than water needed, the small hose you took off is a breather...

I love the volvo shaft seal. Simple, very low maintenance and inexpensive. And no drips……
