Raw water pump for Ford Lehman problems

Hi new to this forum but have a problem with the raw water impeller pump on my Ford 2712E model 80HP Diesel engine.
What do they say if it aint broke don't touch it.
I decided to put a new impeller in, Yes its the correct one.and I have tried the old one again.
I cannot get the pump to pump at all.
There are no blockages in the inlet There are no blockages in the outlet.
I haven't changed the cam but it will not pump not even a few dribbles.
Any suggestions after checking everything 4 times.
Lost
Thanks

Face plate joint not standard thickness or face plate worn-- turnover.

Re: Raw water pump for Ford Lehman problems

When I change the RW impeller on my SP 135 Lehman, I always have to remove the water lines from the pump to gain easy access to the face plate. If you did too, I'd check to make sure you hooked the water lines back up correctly and didn't get them mixed up. Easy thing to do is to remove the water line from the pump to the oil cooler at the oil cooler and see where the water comes out from. Doing this even if the hoses are installed correctly will take care of the only other thing that could be causing your issue which is air in the pump not allowing the water to flow. If nothing comes out, might i suggest you do a little siphoning to get the water flowing. Easy fix either way.

When I change impellers, I grease the shaft, key and wear places with waterproof grease. It helps seal and lube the pump before water is drawn. My impellers last a very long time. I inspect them once or twice a year and do the grease when I do. I can't even remember an impeller failure.

due to that you removed the water lines when replacing the impeller I would remove the out hose on the pump and try while shooting a little water in the pump outlet,, then if it starts pumping water reconnect you hose,

What kind of ford? My SP 135 lehman raw water pump has a splined shaft for the impeller and it is gear driven on the other end. There is no "key".

I have never come across a Raw Water Pump made by Ford, the most used Pumps seem to be Jabsco or Johnson. Like most high speed diesel manufacturers they use dedicated brands.

If you don't find a solution that works for you here you might try the boatdiesel. Com forum. Or you can call American Diesel (804-435-3107) and Brian is really good at helping out people. They have parts if you need them

Have 2711e with Jabsco which I have rebuilt. Strongly recommend Superseal. Love it. Good suggestions above. Impeller backwards? Always something simple in retrospect.
Brian great.

Re: Raw water pump for Ford Lehman problems

The Ford I refered to was originally a 60 hp British industrial tractor .Marinized and supplied by well known shop in Vancouver. The raw water pump drove off the flywheel and impeller had a steel woodruff key which didn't last long .Since it was a new engine right off the pallet, I didn't check. Later when the engine filled with fuel I found the injector return line crush washers were steel with black silicon goop .Since these are inside the valve cover, didnt notice that either.I always check dip stick before starting so not a disaster but I know of several other sad tales of total runaway since it was a fairly common engine . Rotory injection pump distributors since it could be gas of diesel configuration. The rocker arm was prone to seizing when an oil feed O ring failed Other than these draw backs it was a good engine. But trust no one.
