Raw water impeller stuck. Open to suggestions.

How do I take it out? Fins are cracked and it needs to go. I cant seem to move it no matter what I tried.

Pair of flathead screwdrivers, walk it out.

Needle nose pliers if you don't have an impeller puller handy.

It may take a minute to get it moving. Don't pull too hard on any one vane since it'll rip out, but work your way around until it starts to move. Then just keep working it from different vanes as it slowly makes its way off the axle.

This is how I've changed every impeller in my life. I have to be at about 60 as this point, including outboards.

Or Long-Nose locking pliers (Vice-Grips).

All the above. Be careful about using screwdrivers to pry it out as you can damage the pump body and cause a leak at the cover.

Since you aren't saving the impeller you can cut the blades off carefully using nippers to relieve a bit of pressure on it.

I use needlenose pliers, grab it at the hub and yank

True, flathead screwdrivers work if it isn't really stuck.
Be careful not to damage the bronze casting, as in prying against the edge and scratching the bore up.
Tap on the impeller, see if you can get some penetrant into the metal sleeve on the impeller, and try to move it abit.
There is a pin or keyway and key in the collar of the impeller.
You can cut the fins if it helps to pry at it,or worse case heat the collar a bit, use a propane torch, there is a seal near the area so apply heat gradually and tap.
Work it awhile and it'll come. Don't overdo the heat. Don't cook it.
When replacing, be sure to clock the impeller into the running position use some soapy water to install and coat the metal shaft with a small amount of silicone grease to aid removal in the future.

Odds are pretty good there are some other issues with a hard stuck raw water impeller. Poor maintenance and leaky bearings for example. Given the importance here worth changing out the bronze impeller housing unit. Sooner or later the bearing seals will leak. Even yearly changes will not obviate the need for replacing the bearings and that job is not so easy. Having a spare water pump">raw water pump housing unit is high on the list of “essential spares”. Above based on 60 yrs. experience.

Small slip joint or water pump (channel lock) pliers opened so jaws are parallel and close just tighter than hub O.D. so teeth sink in over full depth. Pull straight out.

Needle nose or any non parallel jaw pliers will only grip the outer edge of the hub.

Thank you all for your suggestions. I had limited access to tools and ended up doing this to get it out:

- penentrant
- tap tap
- flat head screwdriver driven directly into the bronze inner bushing of impeller at 180 degree marks anout 1/4”
- two needle nose pliers garbbing at opposite rubber arms
- slow and steady yanks

It came out after about an hour of frustrated staring. I may just invest in an impeller puller!

The water pump is leaking from behind it. I will have to take it out tomorrow and see what I can do to fix. Anyone have done this on a volvo penta MD2002 motor? I cant seem to find any obvious bolts and the shop manual is pretty useless.

You shouldn’t use Vaseline or other petroleum grease on a neoprene impeller. Johnson Pump usually includes a small tube of glycerin with the impellers. Or silicone grease.

One more thing...

Be sure there isn't a securing bolt or pin through the hub of the impeller and shaft. I think I see one in your picture....maybe?

If there is, you'll pull all day with the best puller around and get nowhere...
