Problem with shift cable adjustment

My boat is an 1986 Tashiba-31 with a Yanmar 3GM30F engine, a KH3P gearbox and an Edson(?) pedestal. Recently I had to have the gearbox rebuilt, which was done by a very reputable shop. When the mechanic was re-installing the rebuilt unit, he found that he was not able to get full movement of the lever into reverse. I removed the compass from the pedestal top and we found that when the lever is in reverse, the linkage would be 1/2-in above the top of the pedestal - it was hitting on the bottom of the compass! To fix, I added spacers between the compass and pedestal top.

Now I'm wondering if this was the correct solution. Can't figure how the boat when 30 years this way! Is there suppose to be another adjustment at the pedestal to prevent this?

Re: Problem with shift cable adjustment

You can also lengthen the arm on the inside of the pedestal or shorten the arm on the transmission to accomplish the same thing.

But it’s not uncommon. I’ve ended up helping friends do something similar in two other boats with the same sort of problem.
