Re: Outboard vs. Inboard - Repowering a 31' 1979 CAL

I vote for get-to-know-your-engine. Diesels are not that difficult to master, and you'll never regret knowing your engine so well that you know what to do when it doesn't do what it is supposed to do. I also note in passing that removing the ladder, such that you have no way to climb back on board when you fall in, is not a terribly good idea.

Re: Outboard vs. Inboard - Repowering a 31' 1979 CAL

You will be much happier with the inboard diesel. Having had both. I would not even think about the outboard on a 30 foot boat. As far as rebuild, agree that would be least expensive option. And frankly on an older boat what I think rebuild would be the best idea also. If you can do it with a couple of buddies, even better. I did exactly that one before, and did well for years

Also, I am going to want an inboard for the couple trips a year I plan to take up to the San Juan Islands. With current and potential waves, I am going to want the power and depth of an inboard. My good friend has his boat up in Chicago! I want to sail across to Michigan with him someday!
Gotcha, you can get the outboard pretty deep if you place it well.

That is at the bottom of the mounts travel. I usually use it one up from there.

This is all the way up:

I don't really ever bring it up due to the power tilt.

Obviously it won't be as deep as most inboards. Interestingly, I think in some cases my outboard could be deeper than the original inboard. The inboard prop was offset to starboard so if I was heeling to port the inboard would be closer to the surface. Outboard is on the centerline so that isn't an issue. If I were in really bad chop it could be a problem but hasn't been yet. The Suzuki 9.9 is the same block as the 20hp so it has a lot of displacement for low end torque. Drives (and stops) the boat better than the inboard due to the dramatically larger 4 blade prop vs the original 2 blade.

What engines are you looking at for a repower. I was looking into the Betas and they looked like a very nice setup. Good luck!

Wow, looks good.
Maybe we need thread entitled, "notable engine deals."

Re: Outboard vs. Inboard - Repowering a 31' 1979 CAL

I happen to browse through our local craigslist last night and there is an 24 hp diesel for sale there.

Look around, engines come up for sale regularly.

try Emerald Marine in Anacortes for a Beta Marine. I had a Beta 38 installed last year and am very happy with it. The cost should be less.

Re: Outboard vs. Inboard - Repowering a 31' 1979 CAL

If you can get the engine out any good diesel rebuild shop should be able to rebuild it if parts are available. Here is one in Tacoma.

Diesel Marine Engines, Generators, and Industrial Engines, Parts, Service - CAT, Cummins - Fife, Seattle, Tacoma, Washington

Then if you have other boat projects you have been putting off you can spend whats left of the decent weather getting those done. Then put your newly rebuilt motor back in and next season you'll be ready to go next spring.

Re: Outboard vs. Inboard - Repowering a 31' 1979 CAL

I sailed my 30' Acadian for a summer with no engine after my A4 died. Did have to get the occasional tow from friends and once towed it with the dinghy (rowing - no outboard!) until the wind came up. Spent non-sailing days working on my new, free(*) diesel and getting the mounting rails in the boat realigned for the new engine. It can be done.

It sure looks nice too when you clean the whole bilge while the engine is out and paint it with bright white bilgekote before the engine goes back in... something very satisfying about seeing a squeaky clean hull under the engine. Then take a picture of it.

Exactly! Bilge has never looked better, before or since!
