Not sure what I am doing. Transmission

Hello New here, want to spend days and years reading here so thanks to the community at large.

I have got a transmission with a leaking rear seal, and it will not shift into any gears. So I am removing it. It's a series 1000 Berg Warner velvet drive. Mounted to a C240 Isuzu 55hp.

Iv removed all the bolts and a pass through bolt. I figured it would slid off.

I can't figure out the next step. I tried wiggling the propshaft off but not sure from here.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Cheers!!

Could you be putting to much pressure with the sling? Did you try to remove just holding the transmissions by hand? Cold chisel between the transmissions and engine?

Some Youtube vids that may help. Note:Be careful when using long bolts puller method.Tighten them equally so as to not bend the transmission output flange.

Re: Not sure what I am doing. Transmission

Have you tried without tension on the chain hoist? I removed a Borg Warner from our boat several years ago and remember it not being too tough to get off. I don't recall having much tension on the hoist until it was almost all of the way off. I do think I used a small pry bar around the bell housing. The damper plate on mine had a bit of rust on it and I think the input shaft was kind of stuck in there because of it. Putting it back in with a new damper plate was way easier.

Hello okay so it's probably just a case of more prybar?

The propshaft doesn't seem to move backwards at all seems fused to the transmission.perhaps it's just rust.

Cheers!

Re: Not sure what I am doing. Transmission

couldnt tell exactly how you are doing this from the pictures. In my case, The velvet drive and engine have 4 motor mounts -2 on the eng (front) and 2 on the trans.
I loosened the bolts on the front, and loosede the lag bolts on the trans mounts-removfed the bolts holding the trans to engine bell housing,m jacked up the engine just a bit, whick raised the trans motor mounts-1/4". I used a pri]y bar to slide the trans back. Not easy but doable.

I assume that you have loosed the prop shaft from the trans.

Thanks for all the vids. That is where I seem to be stuck getting the prop shaft to move backwards. Undid all the bolts, water was coming in. Hammered and prayed and used the pryer but nothing not even a mm of movement.

Re: Not sure what I am doing. Transmission

I’m not sure if you mean it’s the shaft coupling or the transmission that’s stuck but if it’s the transmission, go gently with the wedges and pry bar, the problem might be that the input spline is seized in the damper plate and it’s likely that something expensive will break if you apply too much pressure. In one of your photo’s there’s a hole through the adapter plate and if you’re really lucky you might be able to undo the bolts that hold the damper to the flywheel through that hole and the whole thing will release.
Good luck with the extraction, do no harm.

Re: Not sure what I am doing. Transmission

Looks like you backed off the packing gland bolts, which would cause the leakage.

Once you have removed the 4 bolts between the coupling and the transmission, the prop shaft should slide back into the packing gland. It needs to go back a minimum of about a half inch. There is no need to try to take the coupling off the shaft.

In some boats, you can get the shaft back far enough to slide the transmission aft and out. In others, once you get your half inch, you need to loosen the forward engine mounts, take the aft mounting nuts completely off, and tip the engine and transmission far enough forward so that the flange on the transmission will slide past the flange on the coupler.

Getting the prop shaft to slide back shouldn't be that hard. A series of small to larger flat blade screwdrivers can be driven into the crack between the flanges with a hammer. All that is holding it together is some rust.

There could be barnacles, a shaft anode, a rope cutter or a rudder that’s stopping the shaft from going further aft.

Re: Not sure what I am doing. Transmission

It is hard to tell from your pictures but it looks like you have very little room to move the transmission back. Bigger PITA but try sliding the engine forward. That should be only 8 bolts and not too hard to do. An engine that size you should be able to pull it forward yourself a few inches.

Where are you located? I can talk by phone to help you out.

Re: Not sure what I am doing. Transmission

Thanks everyone I was able to get it out. Made some mistakes but here is what I did.

I blasted everything with Pen Oil the using a smaller screw driver wedged the coupler and gear apart. This made just enough room for a flat pry bar. I rotated the prop shaft and wiggled them apart.

With the bell housing bolts off. I could then slide the transmission off towards the prop.

Now I need to figure out who knows how to work/ parts for a Borg Warner velvet drive 1000 series.

Try heating the coupling with a heat gun.

(The heat gun is your best friend…)

My two cents

Cheers
