Noise at Start Up: Perkins 4108

Hi there!

When I start my Perkins 4108,at first,the starter motor noise seems normal but when the engine fire up,I get a "Kong" noise and a vibration for a few seconds then it stops and all is back to normal.
Any idea what it could be??

First thing that comes to mind is the starter bendix drive is sticking engaged until the motor gets fast enough to kick it loose.

You were right.I dismantle the starter,had it check over and when ,after putting it back on,I test it,the noise had disappeared.
I had nightmares about changing the dampening plate!

U R welcome! I'm willing to bet it was a rusty armature shaft.
