yanmars have a manufacturers plate on the top of the engine. should have all the necessary info

The manual pertains to three engines of a series. So the OP knows the series but not the actual model.

Yep. Except that it's exactly where 40 years of owners have stepped, when climbing down into the engine compartment.

oh, sorry to hear that (but there is a lesson there !) suppose no chance to use dye or ink rubbing to highlight any remaining engraving on the plate ?

if not, guess it's back to first principals : if it's a single pot it's a 1GM, 2 = 2GM, 3 = 3GM although this doesn't help with the exact model. for this you'll need to find the engine number and hope that's readable.

I'm pretty sure it's a 3GM30, just like they said it was.

But I'm always looking to confirm or disprove my misconceptions. I make too many of them.
