Help! VOLVO PENTA 2002 Gear cable, boat not moving

Good morning,

I hope you are all having a great weekend.

I purchased a Moody 27 three months ago, which came fitted with a Volvo Penta 2002 reconditioned engine, previously a 10 hp.

The problem I am encountering is while on dry dock for seacock and antifouling maintenance. When I returned the boat to the water and engaged the gear forward, the boat did not move.

Upon inspection by a local mechanic, it was discovered that a cable tie was holding the cable in place, indicating that a piece was missing. Which piece is missing? The guy how sold it to me told than this need a repair but i thought it was the cables and not this, because it was really stiff and now i understand maybe was for old cables and the cable tie.

I will attach few image. I have checked the Volvo paperwork on DAM Marine for the gear lever but am unsure if it includes the missing piece, number 1 in the attached image.

Before calling a mechanic, I wish to understand the issue better. Since the cables are not new, I am considering replacing them myself to ensure proper installation.

I understand the problem is similar to not properly securing a cable on a bicycle's shift lever, causing it to not function correctly and change gears.

I would appreciate any responses or opinions, as I am currently incurring expenses for two ports due to the inability to move the boat.

You are missing the shift cable anchor bracket and it’s miscellaneous hardware.
The attached photos show what’s missing.

I agree that you are missing the bracket that holds the gear box end of the cable in alignment with the arc described by the end of the shifter lever on the box and holds the end of the cable sheath in the proper fore and aft position.

It looks to me as if someone "jury rigged" your cable. As it is, it simply will not do, even if you could get it to work sporadically!

The missing bracket is small and light. I would order it via a chandler who will no doubt have to get it from a Volvo marine dealer. Arrange to have it sent to you via overnight courier so you can get your boat moving safely chop-chop!

Jury rigging the cable may have damaged it, so there might be merit in ordering in a cable of the proper gauge and length.

Am I correct in seeing that the gear shift cable is held to a hose with a plastic tie ???
Seriously ???

I don't think I've ever seen a Volvo that is painted white, clearly a reconditioned engine sans shift cable mount.

Worse comes to worse, you could try fabricate one yourself, if you are handy, that is. You have the photo/diagram of that it looks like.

I'm not sure that particular Volvo engine is made anymore, so unsure where to find parts for it. except the aftermarket.

I would suggest search online as there are bound to any number of people trying to buy/sell parts for that engine.

One final note. The photo's above show the gear shift cable coming from the rear of the engine, and attach to the gear shift lever at the bottom, but it could also come from the top and attach to the gear shift lever on the side, so it's possible that plate is or was located elsewhere.
Just a shot in the dark here.

The cable support bracket is VP part number 852168. Suppliers in the US show it available and cost about $30.00. Try any VP dealer in Europe.

This doesn’t include the small cable clamp and nuts & bolts, but they are common parts and available from most cable suppliers such as Morse, Uflex, Teleflex, etc.

Failing that, I've been able to source several brass plates from which such a bracket is easily fashioned with a bit of elbow grease and a few tools.

A vise, a hacksaw, a file, a hammer and even just a hand held drill motor, rather than a drill press will do the job with just a normal level of care being exercised :-)

I ye muck it up the first time, just do it agin :-)!

OP is in Spain I do believe, but this gizmo is so light it can go by letter post. We have a Volvo shop in the little town, sort of a fishing port and certainly a yachting destination, of Campbell River on Vancouver Island.

I could stick my oar in the water there is the OP wants.
