Engine Origin Early 80s straight 6 Volvo

I am looking at a boat with 2 Volvo Straight 6 Engines.
They are Turbo. From the size turbo I would suggest they are emissions mod. They are tiny.
Anyone know the origin of this engine? Is by any chance the 6 Cylinder originally fitted to their "6" series car? They were petrol/gas engines in cars.
The rocker covers are not the same as the petrol engines

These engines as fitted are shaft drive.

The Boat is a 1982 build , I think the engines are original.
Could they be Japanese????

Any ideas out there to confirm their origin.

Re: Engine Origin Early 80s straight 6 Volvo

If the engines are original in a 1982 boat the engine model is probably TMD 40. These are 130 horsepower 3.6 liter engines designed and manufactured by Volvo Penta. Later versions of the same engine were TAMD 40 with 165 horsepower.
The "TMD" designation means turbo marine diesel, and the TAMD means turbo aftercooled marine diesel.

You can confirm this by checking the brass tag riveted to the engine block in the vicinity of the high pressure injection pump. The tag will state the model, the build specification number and the serial number.

Re: Engine Origin Early 80s straight 6 Volvo

Thanks Bruce R
I was aware they were labeled as a Volvo Engine , I was hoping they were manufactured by another manufacturer as with lots of Volvo engines ie Perkins/ GMH et el.
I was trying to get away from the Volvo "only" source for spares.
I am not worried about normal consumables as they can be sourced through any filter manufacturer, bearing manufacturer.
