Re: Diesel tank fill below deck?

I fuel 95% of the time from 5 gallon jerry jugs, using a Baja type funnel. Rarely do I fuel at the deck fitting. I have a 2” opening in the top of my fuel tank that I use. Fuel tank is in the bilge, PS Mariah 31. So much easier than on deck, especially for those times when it’s shitty outside. Not sure why there would be an issue with refueling directly in the tank...

Could be they took a gasoline thing and applied it to any refueling. Can't remember (but assume they did) if they sold gas as well as diesel. Both the fuel docks were in the Gulf Islands of Canada maybe it's just a local thing.

I thought it was odd since I've never run across that anywhere else.

Could you do us a favour please and put up a link to the the relevant 'laws' covering this, I've looked and looked and can find nothing stating 'only the fuel dock attendant allowed to fuel (diesel or gas) the boat'....

Thanks....

How do you insure no overfill if you can't see the overflow (vent). I know you are not supposed to pump till it comes out but it is a valuable last ditch effort to prevent a major over fill/spill if the vent is monitored while filling.

I didn't say anything like that, obviously you misunderstood or confused me for someone else or missed the little winky guy at the end. Try to relax a bit, if I inadvertently disturbed you I apologize, please forgive me. Friends again?

Must be something in the air? I wasn't referring to Europe or anywhere else, I was referring to the health hazards of diesel fumes. I have no idea where you got the Europe thing from.

Thanks for the explanation. Others would have just been sarcastic back at me. Refreshing.

I really meant no insult or the like, just a very poor attempt at humor. It appears I angered someone else on this thread as well, I have to learn to express myself more clearly.

A Baja filter is slow but, it can save you a lot of trouble even if you have Racor filters.

When commercial vessels are within 200 miles of the us coast they must switch fuels. Being installed as we speak are exhaust monitors that record the temps which will then identify what fuel is being burned. Wrong fuel will result in huge fines that make the practice of dirty fuel not worthwhile. So yes, the inspector does come aboard and check .

We aren't talking about commercial ships here. Lets stay on topic.

Yea, that's what the commercial ships thought and did in the Great Lakes when it came to their fuel type, black water and ballast water. The ballast water turn loose more than a few bad actors into the Lakes.

What's fair for the goose is fair for the gander.

Re: Diesel tank fill below deck?

Many vessels fuel below decks by design. Personal experience is be sure air is moving air or space is not becoming vapor concentrated. Obvious is not to breathe vapors but a correct design system the vent should be exhausting the vapors.
The previous post about Canada transport rules discusses gasoline.

Fueling gasoline is often a marina choice to ask all persons off the vessel as a precaution. And as far as attendant required fueling- that could be a law but then I would suggest the attendant must be certified to do such fueling and take the responsibility. Really can not suggest how that would be possible as then conflict with the captain responsibility plays into issue.

You have a hole in the top of your tank bigger than the fuel nozzle, you have a vent probably 3 feet higher up. Where do you think the overflow is going to occur?

I think the new way fill systems are designed are weird. The fill is positioned to flow over the side when you overfill. The fill is as high or higher than the vent so the vent spits fuel usually first.

Then fill in the bottom of the cockpit with the vent much higher makes more sense to me. I can hear when the tank is nearly full, the vent never spits fuel, and if I have a little spitting overfill I have a chance of cleaning it in the cockpit.
