Broken Off DipStick in Volvo MS2 Reverse Gearbox

I broke the plastic dipstick off and it fell down inside on a Volvo MS2A-E gearbox. It was brittle and as I tried to use a screw extractor on it, it just broke apart and fell down inside.

I've seen a similar post and I've used a borescope and claw pickup tool as recommended by someone but once I get the claw on the dipstick it is too large to both come back out the dipstick hole.

I'm weary to take the whole transmission off.

If I could unscrew the upper cover, it would probably give me the clearance to reach in and grab the dipstick. I could't just unscrew it. I believe I need a special tool and press to remove the retention rings on the vertical shaft that seem to prevent me from lifting the cover off.

Can anyone advise on how to remove the upper cover or best get access to inside the gearbox?

I was finally able to remove the dip stick by draining the transmission and then removing the four bolts at the bottom. It took some work to pry the plate off, but once it came off the dip stick and the clutch fell out. I then had to slide the clutch back in and rotate the bolts a little at a time so the plate pushed the clutch back in evenly. So happy it is out and done.
