what gear oil for Volvo MS2-B-L gearbox?

I have a 3cyl 2003 series non turbo engine attached to a MS2 B gearbox. I downloaded a manual of unknown date and it says SAE 20/w30-- which is what the engine supposedly uses? But other sources say volvo synthetic, or 15-45 wt. Advice sought, a lot of conflicting info.

We have the same engine (Volvo Penta 2003) with the same transmission (MS2B). The Volvo Operator's Manual (7746291) indicates 15W/40 oil for the engine and "Viscosity (as for engine) for the transmission.

I note that your transmissions is a MS2B - L (as per the title of your post). Ours is an MS2B-A. The difference seems to be the gear ratio, but the oil recommendation remains the same, as does the quantity (0.8 litres).

The MS2 transmission was available in several sequential versions over the years, and several configurations. All of the sequential versions, B,C,D,E used “engine oil” except for the last version, the E version, and it used synthetic gear oil, 75w/90 wt. Normally the E version had a label on the transmission stating the oil requirement.
The engine oil versions could use 20w/30 or 15w/40 wt.

The configurations available were:
A = down angle output shaft
L = level output shaft
V = V drive version

Available gear ratios were: 2.4:1 and 3.0:1.

Oil grade, other reverse gears and drives ................ Engine oil for Service SE or CD
Viscosity, Service SE ............................................. Multigrade SAE 10W/40 *
Viscosity, Service CD ............................................. Over +10°C: SAE 20W/30 *
Viscosity, Service CD ............................................. Below +10°C: SAE10W *

So, they specify a difference if you are using diesel oil vs. gasoline oils.
