Bosch ve injector pump

Here’s another way for an engine to not start that I learned today.
The stop solenoid on the excellent Bosch pump that’s on some Yanmars, some Volvo’s and Perkins and a whole raft of industrial and automotive engines has a little stop solenoid, normally powered to run but on the MD 22 volvo it’s powered to stop and has a spring that holds it off the sealing port. There are 2 distinct types of solenoid and even if you have the right one and the external retract spring is missing or broken..... trust me, that engine will not start no matter how many times you bleed it or curse it. This info might save a lot of wasted time if you have a VE pump on your engine.

Yep, you got it right Pete!

The philosophy of Volvo Penta has always been that a marine engine should have an “energize to stop” arrangement on the injection system. That way, even if an engine has an electrical system failure, or the vessels batteries go dead, the engine will continue to run without electrical power, and the vessel won’t be stranded at sea or in a dangerous situation.

The Perkins based MD 22 series with Bosch VE pumps, as well as the thousands of Volvo Penta designed and built MD30,40, 31,41, etc. engines were all equipped with VE pumps with energize to stop solenoids.

All of the Volvo Penta D1 and D2 sailboat engines based on the Shibaura/Perkins engines are equipped with “energize to stop” solenoids, whereas the NorthernLights generator engines based on the same base engines are fitted with energize to run solenoids.


Volvo Penta industrial engines, on the other hand, as well as most automotive diesel applications are equipped with “energize to run” solenoids.
