What about this Ford Lees? I believe the Lees is the NZ conversion of the same engine?

Start with the prop. Find out what size propeller is fit, and also what is the largest size propeller that can be fit and still maintain correct propeller clearances. There is no need to buy more HP than the propeller can transmit efficiently to the water. Many builders ignore this and you end up buying horsepower that you cannot use.

Re: 47'Perry needs a new heart

We have some friends who had a Cummins 100 hp installed in their steel Ganley, that had started out as a 45 footer, but was lengthened later. The Cummins people in Australia were easy to work with, and came to help assure the installation met their warranty requirements.

Not sure that JD makes engine’s that small. But a Cummins is a very good engine. I’m sure the inline 6 is too big for you, but if I ever go to a trawler, I want either a JD or a Cummins.

The Lehman's have a big following. I would think there are some places specializing in rebuilding or rebuilt. There used to be one in Seattle; Doc Freeman's. But they are long gone, although I don't know if the Lehman shop was actually part of Freeman's anyway. Seems they were just in the same building but not the same business.

By the way, friends of mine have a Dodge pickup with a Cummins in it. They were on a trip 2 weeks ago and it broke down, the dealer said it needed new injectors. (only 80k miles), get this; the injectors installed were $8500 US! I imagine a lot of that was labor... but injector replacement..? $8500? I would be checking parts prices before buying a Cummins.

I've got one of those. 2711e. 40 years and still going strong. Do they die? How many hours? Not rebuildable?
Second on American Diesel. They may even know about one in your area. They were THE source here but recently have changed.

$8500, ridiculous. That’s what happens when you take your truck to a dealer. Cummins is one of the finest diesels ever produced , they easily go 300,000 to 400,000 in a truck. That guy needs to find a good diesel mechanic.

You are right, Lehman’s are very good diesel and the op should think twice about converting to another type of engine. His engine can probably be easily rebuilt.

Glad you found an engine. Please post back how it worked out. I'm sure you could have found someone to rebuild yours.
Lees Marine here in NZ would definitely be able to but there must be someone in Aus. who would as well.
