Re: Why Choose Gunboat 60 Over Outremer 5X?

The little Gunboats are made in the US. The big ones are made in China.

I'm thinkin the new Catana 59 should be in this group. Those fancy curved daggerboards look fast.

Re: Why Choose Gunboat 60 Over Outremer 5X?

I Dont think so

Outremer 13.1 Tonne
Gunboat 15 tonne
&
Catana 19 tonne

Curved dagger boards or not thats 50% heavier than a Outremer and 25% heavier than a Gunboat.

All the lines are dynamee (13 €/m), spinlocks are giant (1.800 € each..) not to mention special pulleys (600 € each) There is nothing where there is no carbon/kevlar, included but not limited to the dingy, the fore trampoline, the helm, satellite antennas poles, etc..
The workmanship is outstanding..
I haven't been yet to Outremer X5, but pretty soon the new Outremer 52 will be here for wintering and I can then compare. But looking costwise, the Gunboat is definately worth its price.
Is it the boat for everyone and how many people can afford it, it's a different question.

I have a Mitsubishi Evo which is faster than many Porsche, has many accesories included in the price that are optional in Porsche and yet Porsche costs more than the double of my Evo...

Cheers

Yes I had a look through it too and was also very impressed although the skipper did comment that it was a noisy boat due to the carbon fibre construction. Unfortunately I didn't get to go for a sail on it to see how noisy it is for myself.

Hummm! Gunboat equals in design a 30 year old Porsche. Outremer equals something equally sportive but more modern

I am not partial. Even if I recognize the luxury finish and quality of the Gunboat I consider the Outremer Design better. Just my opinion. Regarding boats made in China (Gunboat) and boats made in France I would tend to prefer French boats. They have a much longer and bigger culture in what regards making fiberglass/Carbon boats and all that is connected with sailing, including hardware, rigging and sails.

When I said that it looked like an old Porsche I was not referring to performance. I don't think that between the Gunboat 60 and the Outremer 51 are a big different in performance even if the Outremer with only 1 feet less and less 2400kg, having about the same beam should be easily faster.

The Gunboat 60 should also have a worst performance upwind with medium winds and over, where the much bigger windage will pull more the boat sideways. Also those huge glass panels, almost without any inclination would not inspire me much confidence in huge seas and breaking waves.

No, when I was referring to an old Porsche I was referring to the outdated aesthetics, ones that seem to come from the past. I an not referring to the hulls that seem modern to me but in what regards the condo like type of cabin. Maybe that difference in weight come from that condo like type, while the Outremer is a more sportive boat with a less heavy interior.

If you look at the pictures you would understand what I mean. Even if aesthetics are a personal thing, I guess that if you like Porsche you should understand that Condo like type has nothing to do with the Porsche, unless you are talking about the Cayenne and that for many is not really a Porsche.

I would not care much about the name of a brand when I buy a boat even if Gunboat sounds a bit odd to me regarding a sailboat. If I was very rich I could not care about the Gunboat costing about the double for a bit less performance ( If I really preferred the condo style interior). But I would not be able to buy a boat that I find ugly and looking outdated.

Of course, this is a personal statement. You can find it beautiful but that was what I said from the beginning: That I liked incomparably more the Outremer on account of the aesthetics and design that seemed much better to me. Costing almost half the price and being faster would also count.

I can understand that you like more the Gunboat 60, after all there are boats and cars for all tastes....what makes me disagree is that compassion with the very sportive Porsche 911 regarding a boat that has a Condo like cabin. Not sleek or fast enough in my opinion.

For comparing with a Porshe or a Ferrari I would look for an even sleeker and faster 60ft cat, this one for instance, that made 35K on the first sail test:
