not like that. In fact is easy. In French outremer does not exist as a single word but as: outre-mer and outre mer. You have a point there. There are several type of Americans, the cult ones I believe they would try to call the boat by its proper name and the others... they would call it...whatever. All are in their right even if some non Americans would not understand of about what you are talking regarding Out-Reem-Er.

I am not French and I am not sure I would understand of what you would be talking about, at least immediately...but i guess that I would reach it...and in the end it has positive aspects: It is a always good to have a good laugh
