Why Choose Gunboat 60 Over Outremer 5X?

Hey everyone;

I'm writing this as a true hardcore Gunboat fan, but yet again, I can't stop myself asking the very obvious question; why choose Gunboat 60 over Outremer 5X?

The initial specs of the GB60 was quite outstanding, empty weight of only 12.2 tons for a 60 foot cat! Yet, after a while, they've raised that number to 16.2 . The Outremer 5X weights only 13.1 empty. So where does all that carbon fiber is? O.k., GB60 is loaded with every kind of gadgets that you can possibly think of for your whole life but 5X is not a spartan cruiser like old Outremers as well. And the cabins and main saloon of the 5X somehow seems larger too!

The most recent price of the GB60 was 2.75M$'s, almost double of the 5X. So the question still remains, why go for a GB60 besides the obvious ultra "tingly feeling" it gives just by looking at it? And could it still be faster than 5X although it weights 3 tons more?

Hallo Mehmet , published weights and actual cruising weight may be very different, please look at equipment needed for extended cruising and make a complete picture of both cats
Once you have the real cruising weight of both boats and the sail area you should be able to see which of these cats performs better , sail both cats in order to judge ,

So true. The sail area of GB60 is slightly larger, however, the loaded weight of the 5X is still lower than GB60. So the question can be answered via hull shape -I guess. Which means sailing both and comparing them...

Not that I care, but I'm curious... Afterall, if we ever bought every boat that we speak of in CW, then we'd all own dozens of them. As for the production slot, probably crisis or a distributor's pre order.

Cannot believe a build so basic could cost so much, go to Australia there are any amount of designers that could design a nicer boat and i'm sure an all up build would be way less in cost.

Same thing goes for everything fast, you get almost nothing yet pay 20 times more!

Anybody rich enough to commission one these boats should ensure that the builder contractually agrees to meet the weights that they claim together with penalties for failing to do so.

The carpet will be smoking as they perform their Usain Bolt-like pace back pedaling.

Both seem very heavy to me showing once again that carbon fibre is not the be all and end all.

18.2m (60 ft) gunboat light disp 16,200 kg
17.98m Outremer light disp: 13,100kg

compare that to the Schionning Waterline 1750 light disp of 7000kg
Schionning Designs -


Guarantee the Schionning would be considerably cheaper as well

So perhaps the title of the thread should be

Why choose Gunboat 60 or Outremer 5X when other vessels appear to be better for less?

I don't think it's because of the labor costs alone. MHO is that the prices are this high because the manufacturers know that they can ask for these numbers. For example, the used materials or total labor hours between a 60 footer and a 70 is not that drasticly different but somehow prices suddenly triple themselves.

I agree, it's the most logical thing to arrange a professional designer to draw the boat of your dreams and custom build it at a proper boatyard, however, when it comes to selling time, all those efforts goes to waste just because the boat does not have a brand on it. For example, if Chris White's were built at a single boatyard with a better PR like GB's, they could be sold for at least a million dollar more each.

The bigger the boat gets, more spoiled the requests are, hence the extremely dubbed price tags...
