Re: Two sets of tools

AA3JY all we have on our yacht is a right and left hand Swedish nut rounder, Swiss army knife and a one size fits all socket. Not sure why you would want to have more than one set on a multihull. Remember any extra weight is going to cut into your double digit cruising speed.
Cheers

Re: Two sets of tools

I have two sets of tools.

The tools where I am and my "other set of tools." Each of these sets is kept on the RV and the boat.

I must have a huge collection of tools in the “other set of tools “ because invariably the tool I need is always in that set. So I have to buy it again.

I see you have the same disease we do. (The tool collection in our RV is getting quite impressive. And since it's an older RV we know that if we took some of them out the next trip we went on we'd need that specific thing to fix a problem.)

That is, of course, in addition to 'frequent use' duplicates. If there is a tool that is very frequently used in one specific place (like my mallet I use for breaking up bags of ice, or a couple screwdrivers) then assuming it's a reasonable size/cost we just buy one that lives in or near that spot, which is different from the one that lives in the tool set. (We use paint/nailpolish to color code, usually.) That way the frequent use one doesn't get taken off when someone needs that tool for some other thing, and no one gets stranded with a tool set missing a tool because they forgot to grab it from wherever it keeps being used.

So if we had a multihull we probably wouldn't have a full tool set for each hull, but odds are good we'd have a few items in each hull for the most commonly used tools, plus a main kit that you could take to where you needed it for bigger jobs.

Re: Two sets of tools

I think it is better to keep one girlfriend in each hull. Keeps them apart.

Re: Two sets of tools

Most common tools are centrally located between the hulls. Rest of tools are carried elsewhere. I do keep duplicates of certain sizes, 10mm, 1/2" 7/16" etc as these are the ones most likely to go for a swim.

I feel like my 50 foot cat must be very small compared to many if one has to think its too far to walk from one hull to anther for a tool.

A friend keeps an anvil on board his katilak. Not sure about the full length leather apron and furnace.

I have been seriously considering the value of a small anvil.

Re: Two sets of tools

As I get ready to move into retirement - which includes actually selling the current house and moving into the mother-in-law's - I have been tossing old useless tools and all kinds of junk.

I can really understand having just one good mobile set of tools.

Re: Two sets of tools

That just seems silly to have one set in each hull. How big is this multihull? We keep a lot of tools and most of them stay in one place. I'm still working on making tool bags for specific items/jobs. I find it very hard to remove sockets from a set just because I can't find a place on the boat to use them. That's next level of boat tool awareness.

Re: Two sets of tools

I do keep a small tool set in my chart table (the ones with a range of sockets, screwdriver bits, etc).
They are very useful for when you just want to do a minor job -right now - without pulling out the “real” tools.
