Recommendation needed for a surveyor in the Tampa Florida area.
My wife and I have done it, we put in an offer on a 42 foot Manta catamaran and now we need a surveyor to really check it out. The boat is in Tampa Florida and we are in Californa.
Can anyone give us a recommendation for a good surveyor in the Tampa area?
Thanks,
Joe & Tina

Jonathon Sands did a very satisfactory job for us including going up the mast and oil analysis. He specializes in multihulls.
Cheers,

Thanks but new boats are way out of our price range.

Re: Recommendation needed for a surveyor in the Tampa Florida area.
Congratulation! The 42 Manta is a great boat!
Having been in the boating industry in SW FL since 1995, I have 2 excellent resources for you-
1) Surveyor Rick Shelley
727-480-3172
rdshelley@hotmail.com
Rick is possibly the most thorough and experienced surveyor you will find anywhere and he is located in St Pete. Although he does excellent surveys on all kinds of boats, his roots are in the sail boats.
The only negative is that he is sometimes slow to write a report. Be sure to allow enough time from survey to acceptance of vessel.
2) Joe Hanko-
(239) 789-7510
captnjoe@restless.to
Joe worked for Manta and knows the boats inside and out. He is a consultant, a delivery captain, an instructor, and does all kinds of repairs and installations. He probably knows the history of the boat you are buying.
The only negatives are that he is so busy it can be hard to pin him down and he may be offshore and unable to receive your calls.

Re: Recommendation needed for a surveyor in the Tampa Florida area.
I strongly recommend Jean Levine. She and her husband did a great job of surveying our boat. They really looked at every thing from top of mast to bottom of keel. They checked deck and hull very carefully.
Report was sent very promptly.

Having grown up in Tampa, I can highly recommend Riverhawk Marine to find a good surveyor match for you. Frank knows who all of the players in the area are, and as a ship builder and repair facility their expertise runs far and wide, and a mile deep: RiverHawk Marine :: Facilities
They retro'd my North American Yacht and I couldn't be more pleased... they can be trusted for a good recommendation. What's more they have a lift for 100'+ ships so you can get your prospective new Tampa purchase out of the water to take any guesswork out below the waterline.

I did read it all and I agree, it has some great information in it. It is just geared more toward having you perfect boat built to your specifications. Maybe some day I will win the lottery but..........

Thanks, Dhow, I talked with Rick this morning and he is too busy to get to it but his son is going to do the survey for us.
Joe Hanko sounds like a good person to teach us how to sail the new Cat, I will see if we can arrange something when we get back to Florida.

Thanks tomsayres,
If the quotes I am getting are unreasonable I will have Riverhawk walk across the street and give me an estimate! Too funny, the boat is literally on the other side of Tyson AVE from Riverhawk Marine.

Re: Recommendation needed for a surveyor in the Tampa Florida area.
I second the recommendation of Jean Levine. She and her husband did a vey through survey of my catamaran including going up the mast. Give her a call if you want the whole truth about the boat you are buying (verses a glossed over "insurance" survey).

Sorry but he is arguably the worst surveyor in existence. He lost accreditation with both nams and Sam's, never carried e&o ins, lied about being accredited, and I'm not even sure he practices anymore, and probably has put at risk anyone surveyed by him with their insurance company by not being a surveyor yet performing surveys due to being given recommended by brokers
