I agree. One thing I have learned from this forum: I have been researching boats for years, and EVERY boat I have ever researched has been trashed by someone somewhere for poor build quality.

I have not sailed a Neel 45 but I have been onboard several times and took a good long look at it. My complaints are few: the heads are rather small, while the boat is so freaking wide it would be hard to find marina space. The view from the helmstation is more limited than I would like. There is also aesthetics - it looks like a spaceship landed on the water, and someone attached a sail to it. Traditionalists certainly won't like the boat. I didn't at first, but it grew on me.

The advantages are huge - the storage space in the amas and the "cellar" is massive. The cabins have a spectacular view of the sea, and pretty much everything is on the same level. By all reports it is also quite fast.

Errrrrrr .... ;-)

Is it a good idea to load amas in a tri?

In some executions, they show bunks in the amas ...

If you keep it light it shouldn't be a problem. And yes, you can also have four berths installed in them, if you want.

Re: Trimaran Neel 45'

Has anyone sailed a Neel 45 enough to speak meaningfully about its upwind abilities and any leeway concerns for the version without a centerboard? Can it go upwind or does it have leeway issues? The "Sport" version that "won" the ARC line honors and is for sale on Yachtworld appears to have a centerboard but the "regular" versions do not.

See pics 23, 24 for centerboard on Sport version.

Re: Trimaran Neel 45'

We were overtaken by the keel-less one on the stretch from Diamond to Le Marin entrance. She sailed somewhat wider but heaps faster and so she made it to the upper mark in less than half the time compared to our humble monohull. I think I have the exact timing somewhere in our notes as I fancied the design at that point.

Mind it is nearly flat water there (max 2.0m wind waves) and the current is nearly all the time against you - some 1 knt on average.

My estimate of her is of VMG 4.0 in 15 knots of wind. You may try to match this against their polar diagram see what they expect in flat seas and with an empty boat.

Cheers,
b.
