Stern Tube Replacement

I have a 1973 Alberg 30 with a Yanmar diesel and a cracked and leaking stern tube (not the stuffing box but around the outside of the stern tub). Is it necessary to remove the engine to remove and repair or replace the stern tube?

Last season, I hauled out in Jolly Harbor, Antigua Friday, back in on Monday. While out, I ground repaired the shaft log and re-bedded the packing assembly onto the log. 15 layers of epoxy and glass. Way stronger than original, no leaks.

No, if you can get into the area for repair
