Spinnaker or Code 0

Going to replace my sails and want to add either a spinnaker or code 0. Which should I pick? I love the look of the big spinnaker flying but will the code 0 give me more options and performance?

Re: Spinnaker or Code 0

It all depends on the boat, crew, experience with spinnaker, intended sailing/racing? etc. you don’t buy a sail based on the look of it...

Re: Spinnaker or Code 0

Code 0 is an upwind sail.

Spinnaker is a broad reaching and downwind sail.

Not all boats will take a Code 0 either.

Now what is this question again?

Re: Spinnaker or Code 0

If looking for a downwind sail with the convenience of a furling Code 0 then a furling Asym or Gennaker would be the way to go. Obviously you would benefit from a pole ( it you would need one with a spinnaker in any case.)

Re: Spinnaker or Code 0

After sailing some miles on my boat I recognized that the boat would benefit the most from help sailing deep angles, so my first sail addition was an asymetrical spinnaker. This worked out very well.

You need to run the same thought process.

My next sail add may be a screecher...giving it some thought now.The screecher or a code zero requires a furler and mounting the proder on my boat. This adds some complications. But might be fun.

Re: Spinnaker or Code 0

A proper Code Zero is, I believe, I high luff tension sail. It is big and has specific geometry. Not all boats can be retrofitted to C0.

Given that most boats are not pure racers, I think a large LIGHT furl away genoa sail meets needs of 99% of cruisers. Probably something in stormlite dacron.

According to Contender:
"... If you do prefer a woven fabric, we suggest that you to ask your sailmaker about Contender Stormlite polyester sailcloth. Stormlite is of a similar weight and finish to the equivalent Nylon spinnaker cloth but its Polyester weave gives it greater stability under load...."

Then basically you end up with a sail looking similar to this:
https://www.contendersailcloth.com/e...zero-laminate/
just in a less technical cloth more resistant to abuse and UV.

---

The above sorts out maxing out your light airs upwind performance (just make sure the hull matches the ability to sail in light airs in the first place).

Or else do you want to improve your downwind sailing ability?

Have you tried sailing wing and wing with a pole?

How long is that pole then? It should be EXTRA long for this lob - longer than a spinnaker pole.

Wing and wing is cheaper, easier and way less headache than a spinnaker.

Re: Spinnaker or Code 0

Code 0 will cost more, you need a furling drum and a prodder with stays, a two to one spectra halyard, or non twisting line. An asymmetric (depending on cut) can be used at 70 AW, if you attach the tack to a bridle between the bows it can be hauled out to a bow for DDW. If you ease the halyard it will balloon out, but not as effectively as a symmetric. No need for a pole. You can dowse the Assymetric with a sock or if designed correctly use a top down furler (more cost). It is not wise to leave furled non UV protected sails up and so this is the slightly more hassle than simply unfurling a code 0 with a UV strip. The Code 0 could be run wing on wing DDW, it is just not nearly as effective as a spinnaker on anything past 90 AWA.

Re: Spinnaker or Code 0

i have both code 0 and spi.

Code 0 is basically increased jib, lets say extra reef level of white sails. I learned to use it up or down wind and this is the mile clocker for us.

In light winds and if angle deep, it becomes slow. Then change to sym spi.

they complement each other. If I had to choose, code 0 woud be - up to 20 kn aws. As barnakel mentioned you need boat to be strong enough to take it. Tension in luff is serious. If you not sure your boat can do it, just buy spi. Cheaper as well.

What's the boat? What sort of sailing do you do?

No pole necessary on a MULTI

Re: Spinnaker or Code 0

Depends on the boat and the working sails but if she has a large roach main and self tacking jib then both, or more specifically an asymmetric spi and a screecher.
Asym. for wind aft of the beam and the screecher as a large light to medium air genoa for wind on and ahead of the beam.

Re: Spinnaker or Code 0

If it’s a multi, consider a screecher on a furler. You can reach higher than a Code 0, but if you’re looking to go a bit deeper go with the C0 or spinnaker to go even further.

Good luck
