Thats news to Karen, Tony's better half, she is planning many a grand voyage on it.

Kato is stunning and very comfortable cruising boat for a couple.

It impressed Tony, but hey, what would he know,eh?

Not a drop of diesel used, all power courtesy of solar and the OceanVolt regeneration while sailing.
You really get worked up don't you?

6 knots at 3 litres per hour from a $70,000 propulsion systems doesn't impress me. I get better than that from a $6000 20 HP Honda.

Maybe it excites you, that's fine.

The rest? Well, in the right weather we could do that using maybe a litre of petrol...

The 8 kw was coming from a diesel genset right?

You may find that, sooner or later, you will be passaging and half the day will be dark. And you never know, it might even be cloudy during the day, maybe even raining for a few days.

And if you have a Watt & Sea hydrogenerator, say their super duper 600 Cruise, you will be getting a whopping 260 watts at 7.5 knots boat speed. If you are lucky enough to be zooming along at 10 knots, you'll get about 500 watts, their maximum.

On the other hand the regen you would get from the OV OV SD15 Servoprop would be 1,500 watts at 7.5 knots ( 6 times as much), 3,000 watts at 10 knots, and unlike the Watt & Sea that max's out at 10 knots, the SD15 Servoprop regen just keeps going up. At 12 knots there will be about 4.5kW PER MOTOR !

That is a fair amount of useable power, in fact, more than many would get from a genset running.

I think that's pretty cool, but I guess it takes a bit to get you excited.

This would all be more impressive
If the price weren't so excessive!

You can buy a lot of Watt & Sea's for $70,000.

You still haven't told us what your article has to do with the pros and cons of Electric Propulsion.

What rubbish! An OceanVolt SD15 cost is about USD$14,000, so yes somewhat more than an equivalent marine diesel, but by all means feel free to toss around rubbish figures to try to justify your case.

Yes, for $70,000 you could buy 10 Watt & Sea 600's since they are USD$7,000 each. And you would HAVE to buy 6 of them (and figure out how to mount that many- good luck with that) to equal the regen power output of a single OV SD15.

So, you'd spend 6 x $7,000=$42,000 which is 3 times the cost of the OceanVolt SD15 !

And tell me, exactly how much Propulsion would you get from the 6 Watt & Sea 600's???

Yep, and $19,000 Oz is $14,071.40 US. I was using USD figures.

But to be correct the OV SD15 is not equivalent to a 54HP, it is roughly equivalent to a 45HP diesel and by equivalent I'm talking about equivalent thrust, which is what matters.

Both have a thrust in the order of 320kgf at full power, if my sources are correct.

So, for USD$14,000 you could buy 2 Watt & Sea 600 hydrogenerators, or 1 OceanVolt SD15. But with the OceanVolt you would get 3 times the battery charging power AND silent, instant, sweet smelling, propulsion. Also virtually no maintenance, far superior dockside manouverability, ......and so forth.

Now, what was that about, "What are the benefits of electric propulsion?

The trouble is, this $14,000 motor is pretty much useless on it's own.

?
Thrust at what speed?

Static thrust is meaningless. You could fit huge diameter, low pitch props and get very high static thrust, but this would be useless for propulsion purposes.

"YOU CAN'T BE SERIOUS!"

Conrad Coleman in the Vendee Globe didn't think it was "pretty much useless", did he? It kept him powered through the entire race, and in spite of all the other difficulties he had, power availability was not one of them.

It worked perfectly for the entire race, unlike Watt & Seas that packed up ( which is why they carry a spare), and, dare I say it, several DIESELS that misbehaved.

Keep your eye on how many Vendee Globes install OceanVolt SD15 Servoprops next race.

Don't give in BB! I've been away from the forum for a while, sporadically checking in. Was wondering if you ever decided to build a FF46

Thrust at full power speed, depends on the boat (hull resistance) what that speed value is.
