Lightwave 47

Hey Sailing Experts,

Looking at the Lightwave 47 motorsailer, anyone have any info, experience with this model? E-mailed the factory, no response so far. Interested in knowing if this is a quality builder and approx price for a new build...

Are we talking the full on MOTORSAILER version or the TRIMTAB MOTORSAILER version?

Well, if you know that there is also a trimtab version, I would be interested in the pros/cons of both. You obviously know something about the Lightwave. I am intrigued with the power but wonder with that much engine if it may sail like a dog.

I expect this is probably an expensive boat...

Speaking in general terms so as not to upset anybody.

Just Guessing/Speculating.

Generally if you put bucketloads of horsepower into a sailing catamaran hull, it will tend to squat down in the stern and dig a great big hole for itself. Generally a motor catamaran capable of 23 knots will have a flat run aft and no rocker aft. The opposite of a sailing catamaran.

The squat can be controlled to a degree with a trimtab/ planing board arrangement aft.

All this comes at the penalty of adding drag under sail.

Look at the ridicule the Macgregor 26 gets for trying to turn a sailboat into a ski boat.

So you may have the choice of the no rocker under water profile of the MOTORSAILER or the rockered sailboat underwater profile with the TRIMTAB arrangement but a much lower top speed.

Either way, good luck motoring into 25 knot headwinds with that rig in the air , at 20 knots.

I came across a lightwave 47 in Malaysia with 150 or170hp yanmars ? cant remember exact size.The trim tabs were huge, this is what got me talking to the owner. By memory he seemed happy with the boats sailing ability and was obviously very happy with its motoring speeds. Once again if memory serves me it seemed to sit quite well in the water.

Another thought, if its running 2 200hp engines I would imagine its hardly likely to have folding/feathering props for the monsters required to give these motors a good grip on the water so the sailing performance is going to be compromised considerably .

as I recall there was a review of it in Australian Multihull world magazine...a quick google search on Lightwave 47 motorsailer " takes you to the Lightwave web site, where the review is repeated, including, at the end of the article A$1,450,00 for that version.....very high quality, well respected builder
