The Galapagos can be very busy and expensive. You can't just cruise wherever you want to either. Most yotties just stay in the harbors and take the daily tour boats. If you want to visit some of the allowed places on your own boat then you must pay $200 per person on your boat per day! And you must hire a National Park guide at $350 per day and that guide gets his/her own cabin on your boat! Usually only big boats go for this. And these are extra fees on top of the regular clearing in fees which are about $1000 more or less. I'm not saying don't go there just make sure you bring your wallet.

Do you know about Noonsite? It has all the rules and regs for cruising every country in the world plus news and more.

Sandcrab... I had NO idea... seriously. WOW! I can understand them wanting to control the number of people, and to protect the delicate environment.. I just didn't realize it would be THAT expensive....

Don't worry about excluding Mark, he sails a Beneteau so obviously doesn't get much past coastal cruising. www.ourlifeatsea.com
should give you a taste of coastal cruising in a plastic boat

Re: across the pond.. and beyond..

Galapagos was quite cheap to clear into, about $200. There was no extra costs.

Day tours were about US$40 for a day. 3 course set dinner $13 including beer.

If you want to sail aoround the other island it gets expenvise because you must take a park ranger guy, but its much better and cheaper to take a vace t berth in one of the local cruise ships. Book there in San Cristobal and not overseas.

Galapagos is one of the most exciting places i've been.

See photos and a write up about clearing into Galapagos somewhere in this page Our Life At Sea - Cruising in 2008
Heres a link to the Word Doc. It covers Panama Canal too. http://ourlifeatsea.com/pangalapagos.doc

Curious that these cruisers say about $600 minimum in the Galapagos and that is for 2013. When were you there?

Re: across the pond.. and beyond..

All i know is that before we went there all the information we got from cruisers was 3/5 of 5/8 of total ********.

We were all told it was illegal to stop anywhere, boat were shoving stuff in their engines to give dirty exhaust to claim an excuse.

Of course the reality is different.

The link you posted the people stayed 5 weeks, we stayed less than 2 weeks so the fee sounds the same.

So the better answer is: the Galapagos are totally unmissable and thus affordable!

Not sure when Mark was there, I was there in 2008 and 2011. One thing for sure from the article above "(5) Expect the rules to change frequently and without notice. Suddenly, for example, on 21 March 2013 it became a legal option to buy diesel in Isla Isabella; previously it was a cloak and dagger operation under cover of darkness!"

Can be done with 15 minute sleep cycles but I prefer to take on crew from the internet or word of mouth.

I'm very new to sailing.. but I thought there was a rule stating that someone needed to be on watch at all times. I remember when I came across it, my husband and I wondered how solo sailers do it? the movie "All is Lost" comes to mind...

Horse's for course's really.. some use 15-20 min timers and catnap... exhausting.
The folk who DGAS and are a 'danger' to society.. crash when its needed... and have a look around when they get up to pee..
Should caution you.. this approach is not advised in shipping lanes
Doubtless you will now receive a lot of posts on how to solo safely

The people who race solo round the world generally have timers set to wake them every 10 or 15 minutes. apparently they can function well enough by getting short deep grabs of sleep.

But yes, there is a rule stating that someone should be on watch.
