Re: 440 Lagoon

I just had to get "tonnage" to register a lagoon 450 in Jersey. There was no shortcut: had to locate and hire a registered tonnage surveyor in Split who was credentialled by iims and recognised by the Jersey boat registration office. He came by, tape measure the length width of one hull at widest and height from bottom of bilge to deck. That was it. I assume he went off and did some calculations. Cost... 200 euro.

Sure appreciate the info. It really seems like a total waste of time. Any chance you could send me the tonnage he came up with. Tks

Re: 440 Lagoon

If you are codeing the boat for charter this probably will not work.

Lick finger, stick in the air and think of a number between 14 and 16. Then write 15 on the form...

We have never ever been asked or questioned, no ones bases any billing on it and if the hoist is big enough for you to fit in the slings then it is is big enough to handle a 440.

At 7.7m wide we need a cat hoist and the 440 is in the mid range of cat widths. so if the hoist can take a 570 for example or a 620 you are good.

Every form asks for tonnege, but no one gives a monkeys what you put.

For about 2 years we put 30 tonnes as that is what we had been told we were somewhere along the line, then we actially thought about this and realised it was rubbish.

15 is a reassnoble guess give or take.

Re: 440 Lagoon

I agree with you all the way. In Canada they have an archaic system that came from G.B. It had to do with a barrel of rum that was measured at 1 tonne volume. A tonnage measurement . really has little to do with weight .This is my understanding .They just require it to reg. a vessels over 12 meters.Tks

Re: 440 Lagoon

Maybe a dumb answer but wouldn't Lagoon have that information?

Re: 440 Lagoon

The specs from Lagoon would be good for me but to reg. the boat they want a certified individual to sign the doc. Just another money grab

It's not just a Canadian thing. It's an IMO convention.
International Convention on Tonnage Measurement of Ships (London 1969)

It was originally based on the number of tuns (barrels) of wine that a ship could carry and was called tunnage.

It's now based on either the total enclosed volume (Gross Tonnage) or he cargo carrying volume (Net tonnage) of a vessel.
