Yacht choice

I am after peoples experiences , opinions and thoughts on my situation.
I live in Sydney Australia and am married with 3 teenager girls all of whom like boating including the wife. They don't mind sailing but it is more about the destination. Taking school sport and just life in general I can imagine only spending about one weekend a month ( on average ) on the boat with the family, and hopefully maybe a week or two on holidays. As for me I have retired and can spend way more time on board, maybe some twilight racing and sailing to the holiday destination and pretty much just time on the water.
So what yacht do I get? It has to be able to be sailed short handed, I don't want a racer but I don't want a slug of a boat. The cockpit has to be big and comfortable enough for 6 people and access to the water has to be easy. The interior has to be of the standard that 4 city females can stay 2 weeks without driving me insane and will want to do it again. My budget is about $100K, is this possible. Any feedback will be appreciated.

Re: Yacht choice

Yep. Buy a Nantucket Island (er?) 33. Peter Cole design.
Look at the specs on ....sailboatdata.com.....go to designers... Peter Cole.
Usually one or two available.
Look @ yachthub. com or boatpoint or boatsales. Massively roome with an aft cabin
How about Fisher motor sailer.
Plenty of nice older but very good Beneteaus, Catalinas,
If you want to ask me if you should buy either wood/timber or steel...then don't !!
If you are a competent welder and love living the rest of your life working on the boat then steel is for you.
Wood/timber....ditto.
Most people will tell you that it looks like fibreglass is going to be forever.
Oh, and you wont need 100k.
Keep asking, lots of people in Oz will guide you.
And Merry Christmas.

Re: Yacht choice

Just read your bio kill'.
If you want to sail the world then, for all intents and purposes, you're going to have to go via Cape Horne, The Horn of Africa etc because the Suez Canal is rarely done because of piracy.
Panama of course is an option.
Jeanne Socrates is an octogenarian who has recently departed the Pacific North West on another circumnavigation. AND she is doing it solo.
Just out of interest.

Even with a $100million budget you will never achieve that

If you can skip the sanity requirement, something like thses could be ok

Just the thing and right on budget.. 1988 Westerly Oceanlord 41 Sail New and Used Boats for Sale -

Very nice accom below for four females and a commodious cockpit the captain can kip in in clement conditions...

It works well ... but don't ask how I know this.....

Re: Yacht choice

The problem with teenagers is they become young adults very quickly and disappear off to lead their own lives. Ours are now 23 in the Army and 20 and Uni so don't come sailing anymore.

Will you be in a similar position in a few years?

Pete
