We have been considering one of the newer X Yachts (X-34). Does anyone have anything good (or bad) to say about them?

I have sailed on two very different ones: 412 (cruiser racer) and 119 (racer). I liked both and them. They are well built. I suggest that you make sure the interior meets your needs / wants and the give one a sea trial.

How well does the 412 work as a cruiser? We are in the market for a liveaboard for when we retire in 5 years. There is a 2001 for sale in San Francisco for $219K, looks to be in great condition.

I think it works well as a cruiser. As for being a liveboard, that is a matter of personal preferences. Take a good close look at it keeping in mind what you would like.
