Re: What are these pipes?

MicHughV,

I completely agree. I had a similar problem on the 33’er. Deep empty keel void. So I made it into another fuel tank.

If I understand the OP correctly he did trace the hoses and we are seeing both ends. So there must be something else connecting to the keel of the skeg. It is because the black hose is crimped that I assumed there is something smaller inside it.

Then there is the possibility that this is just some weird fantasy that makes no sense. The builder just did something silly? I like to think not, but it is possible.

Re: What are these pipes?

My best guess is that it is a keel cooler that has been decomissioned or perhaps never commissioned in the first place. The black hoses would have gone to whatever is being cooled rather than T'ed into the red hose.

Re: What are these pipes?

This is what I think.

I'm looking at the first photo.....I see a black T-fitting that appears to connect the black hose to the red hose.
This seems to indicate that there are two tanks in the keel or maybe a baffle plate of some sorts, regardless, these are ,imo, the fuel pick up points.

In order to draw fuel from the tank, there must be a delivery pipe that extends down to the bottom of the tank.

My thinking is that the first pic showing those hoses is the fuel pick up point. The hose clamps of both red and black hoses are fitted around a tube that extends to the bottom of the tanks. The black and red hose are connected at this point, so that fuel can come from either tank, or side of frame as the case may be.

I say tanks....because as a steel boat there are likely steel frames in that keel. Ok, bear with me. To make a fuel tank here would mean cutting holes thru' the frames, or some way of connecting them together.

Now, we come to the next pic. The hoses appear to be connected to a threaded metal pipe, with a plug on top.
imo, these are the fuel return lines. The threaded pipe may at one time have been the fill pipe to fill the tanks. The large diameter suggests that, but there is now a plug, there and some concocted piece on top to enable the return lines to be connected there. It doesn't matter that the black hose is kinked here as it is coupled to the red hose only a few inches away from the threaded pipe.

A new fill pipe is likely to be found elsewhere.

That's how I see this....

Re: What are these pipes?

That makes as much sense as my cocked up idea. LOL

Tis a mystery, for sure.

Re: What are these pipes?

It's always a challenge to solve these CF puzzles, when only a couple of pics are presented for review.
It would be much simpler if we could see the boat.

Trust that we have provided some food for thought.

Maybe vent to extract mist air so it doesn't rust from the inside.

Just guesses.
This what I don't care for in this forum, guesses.
Possibly asking more questions helps more?
But...guessing?
IMHO, dilutes the thread.
Sorry.
Probably not a helpful comment either.

It also doesn't help that the OP does not respond. He is the only one with eyes on the situation.

Re: What are these pipes?

I suspect he is away from the boat.

We have given him a lot to look at and no answers.

And he may be trying to run down the PO.

Can you imagine his consternation? It would be driving me nutz, not that it is a far trip mind you.

Re: What are these pipes?

I like to think I know my way around a boat...most any boat.....but I surprise myself from time to time when I come across something of which I have no clue....I try to admit to those times with a shrug of my shoulders and a non-committal response which allows me to buy some time to ponder the matter...

He posted 5 times in the thread.
And seemed to agree with MicHughV as to some questions about a dual use fuel tank and??
There were fuel Inspection, and inlet outlet lines mentioned, these other lines are larger diameter than fuel pickups are.
Probably vent as was mentioned.
They look to be 1/2"or larger.

Re: What are these pipes?

Hi
I would be surprised if they were fuel tanks as our fuel tank is further forward. Possibly maybe used to fill with oil. I will be on the yacht later in the week so can check, if there are any questions that I have not already answered. I have attached a photo of the outside of the hull if this helps. I am nervous to start pouring oil into these pipes just incase they are used for something else.
Thank you for all the replies as it helps with this puzzle.

Well, if it's a FRP boat, I don't think oil, maybe water ballast, or stowage.
Looks to be glass.
