Re: Vendee Globe 2016 - Bon Voyage!

Ross Daniel, Alex's technical director said today that they see no pressing need for him to do that as he has been doing so well the way it is.

Quote:
Daniel says he cannot foresee any imminent opportunity – or pressing need – to stop the boat and cut away the jagged stump of the foil.

Really like this guy. He's always cheerful and says only nicer things about competitors and sending them good vibes.

Shiraishi lost his mast today. That makes 5 boats broken out of 29 starters. My pre-race prediction was 11 finishers, but we have the Southern Ocean and the North Atlantic in winter to go.

Re: Vendee Globe 2016 - Bon Voyage!

Yep. Some of the boats got somewhat bruised in the first real world ;-) wx system of the race. But there is more wx coming.

The weather will sort the prepared from the meek, and a number of bad luck ones will have to go home early too. BUT there is less bad luck if one is well prepared, at least this is what the sailing karma people say.

Nandor lost a kite, a halyard, and control over the boat, there are two headboards lose and one mast missing (well, half of it) and two AP failures.

It is only the beginning.

How many will make it all the way?

You think it is broken?

I thought it was jammed & non operable because of the crash.

That means broken to me.

Romain Attanasio has hit a UFO and damaged both of his rudders. He is heading to Cape Town.

Inoperable and broken are interchangable.

Re: Vendee Globe 2016 - Bon Voyage!

Interesting that in the last video by Alex Thomson he commented on the reaction of some people to his driving the boat. He said something like when he is sailing over 20 kn. that what we saw was completely normal. He said it was a "harsh existence but completely normal".

I have read about this before but never witnessed. Off to watch the vid right now.

I like how he built the promise over 4 videos and now I can see how it gets done.

BTW I would imagine such a small Yanmar could (or could not?) be started by hand ... if you have the handle ...

I love these videos. I love how VG upgraded their media capability. This is how the shore/media side of racing should look like.

I KNOW extreme ocean racing is hard ... but I want to se the sweat and the tears. I want to watch superboats and I want to know they are sailed by HUMANS.
