Universal 5411 water in engine tray, oil splatter

I have water collecting in the engine tray after running my Universal 5411 for an hour or so. I also have oil splattered on the wall of my engine compartment after usage. Any ideas on the cause and how concerned should I be? Engine seems to be running ok and there is some water being ejected overboard along with the exhaust. I just acquired my 1979 CAL 2-27 (1st sailboat) about a month ago and I have very little experience with diesel engines. Thanks for any direction!

Both water and oil leaks sounds like it could be head gasket. Have you looked at the engine when running to see if you can see where the leaks are? I would also check the oil in the engine. Look for a grey color indicating water getting into the oil. Black or amber is OK.

The 5411 is raw water cooled. If this has been in salt water for 40+ years, you could have serious corrosion problems. I had a 5411 in my previous boat and had to replace it.

The water could be from the shaft packing, not the engine. It’s important to figure out the actual source.

The oil could be as simple as a clogged breather or a gasket leak. Again, find the source. Guesses here aren’t helpful.

Re: Universal 5411 water in engine tray, oil splatter

does it appear the the oil have been "slung" around the engine bay. Ie did some oil somehow get on the exposed shaft? or is only on one spot on the

After cleaning the engine bay of oil and water.

if you didn't find any water in the oil on the dipsticks.

I would run the engine at dock in neutral for a while. under various RPM. if water appears, check the exhaust hose clamps, mixing elbow, etx for water leaks

check around the engine for oil drips etc. and see if anything manifests itself.

if nothing, then while securely tied up at dock or take it out on the water and have some at the helm and run the engine while in gear and you stay down below with the engine looking for oil and water.

no matter you gotta get the engine very clean so you can spot the oil leaks or Id them by touch.

just remember if the engine is running be mindful of the spinning bits.

Check the raw water pump oil seal-is driven from camshaft?

Check that the dipstick is in the hole and the oil filler cap is tight..... And regarding the wet engine tray, maybe there’s water getting in from a leaking shaft seal or the coolant overflow pipe..... or as suggested earlier in the thread, the raw water pump seal.

Thanks everyone for the great response! I will source the leaks as advised and let you know the culprits.
