Re: Stuck propellor

Thanks all for your comments. I think I’ll go and and call for help at the marina and check what they do. perhaps the safest solution given the potential for damage. Thank you.

Yanmar or Volvo Saildrive? Keep us posted about how you get the cone nut off, I’m hoping it comes off without damaging either the nut or the thread on the propshaft.

The OP's boat is a Beneteau. Therefore he has a Yanmar saildrive.

Re: Stuck propellor

Hi Guys. Well I got in touch with the boatyard and after 90 mins labour charge, he said: The bolt for the cone nut sheared so it will be needing a new one of them before putting it back on.

Fortunately the rope cutter comes with a new bolt so all good and we will fit it. I do not know how he took the prop off and why the bolt sheared but this time, paying for the labour and experience seemed worth it. Thanks for all your responses.

Apply Tef-gel to the bolt and fasteners before reassembly. It may help prevent this issue in the future.

Re: Stuck propellor

I always start a project like this with a healthy spray of Corrosion X red can….nothing beats in in my opinion. Spray once, let it penetrate for a few minutes then repeat. I sometimes let it sit overnight before applying force. Good luck.

Re: Stuck propellor

You could by pass the problem by installing a two piece rope cutter which clamps around the shaft like your zinc. I did that and found it very effective and super easy to install or remove. I had a Beneteau 440.

He won't be doing that on his saildrive

Re: Stuck propellor

Most line cutters do not require prop removal to install. The cutter splits in two and is attached with 2 allen head bolts.

Re: Stuck propellor

Had same issue, don’t bang on it with a hammer, it’ll just damage it. Get a prop puller or rent one from a yard, it’s normal for the shaft and prop to adhere to each other. When you clean it up and the shaft, put a small layer of marine grease on both and it should make it easier the next time you take them apart.

Absolutely DO NOT put anything on the shaft before reinstalling the prop. It will interfere with proper seating of the prop hub on the shaft. These surfaces are designed to mate metal-to-metal and the tolerances are very small. In case anybody was unclear on the concept, the prop should not be easy to remove. It was meant to stay on the shaft until significant force is applied to remove it.

Re: Stuck propellor

It’s a Saildrive with a spline and despite the thread title “stuck propeller” it was actually, according to the OP’s posts, a stuck cone nut, not a propeller stuck on a shaft.
Yanmar recommends using grease on the spline.
