3) what’s the heaviest weight you’d put on a stern rail motor mount?

Thanks

Check out Better Bracket from Simple System Marine, particularly if you have 1-1/4” pushpit tubes and your motor is a heavy 2-cylinder model. They have four different configurations, very decent quality, and cheaper than Edson. However, if your motor is a 1-cylinder model, tubing is one inch or less, and there is a T-junction available to clip to, the teak or similar plastic square one from Defender is the best deal. West Marine has or had a similar slightly larger one for about $60.

I have not mounted the Better Bracket yet, need to fabricate a spacer and do some cutting on a pushpit seat, which I am reluctant to do. Here is how it looks:

Re: Stern Pulpit Outboard Motor Mount!

I mount my 26kg Yamaha 8hp on a $30 seadog bracket. The bracket is old and bending so I'm looking to replace it, but it did just fine on my Atlantic crossing. Unlike many I don't have a single locker large enough to fit any sized outboard in.

Oddly, I've not seen many/any brackets rated for more than 35kg.

The one above is rated up to 125 lb/60 kg.

Re: Stern Pulpit Outboard Motor Mount!

Been thinking about replacing mine. I have no vertical bar where the outboard engine needs to go. PO put one on with a short piece of PVC pipe to a tee he split to go over the bottom rail. It looks stupid and is not stable...
I feel silly that I didn't think to just make one out of a board long enough to reach the bottom rail and clamp with ss ubolts.....dah!

Thanks for the info folks!

Re: Stern Pulpit Outboard Motor Mount!

I have happy with my Edson mount but it was expensive, even on sale. If I had thought about it further, I'd likely have tried Tayana42's route as it looks quite similar.

Re: Stern Pulpit Outboard Motor Mount!

We've got one like this ( I think it's made by sea dog?) doesn't have the down ward rail to mount to, so it's just bolted on the top . Our 6 hp Johnson rides through anything on it .

They're probably talking about the Edson one, which is about $400.

Re: Stern Pulpit Outboard Motor Mount!

We circumvent the weight issue by using a Honda 2.3 hp outboard, 35 ish pounds, our dinghy is a walker bay 8 footer, with the inflatable pontoons, easily light enough to drag onto a rocky beach, or onto the fore deck if needed. It’s the poor mans RIB.

Fair winds,

Re: Stern Pulpit Outboard Motor Mount!

Piece of plastic -- the type they make cutting boards from -- and 3 stainless u bolts. And Bob's your uncle.

As to outboard weight:

I've gone from a 48kg 25hp Mariner to a 27kg 8hp Selva to a 17kg 3.5hp Mercury.

When you balance handling the motor and not breaking your back or falling overboard, against speed and planing ability, handling -- as the years go by -- handling wins more and more and more and to hell with the rest.

Next step will be a Torqueedo, which breaks down into two parts

For pictures of it on my boat, look at my previous post.
It fit right out of the box, installed in like 5 minutes.
