RaymArine st 40

Hi all, I've got a cal 39iam just getting sorted for a late trip to the carribean from the chesapeake Iam stuck with a st 40wind and rotovector I've heard these are crap what I reAlly need to no is is it good enough to steer the boat without jibing it or performing some other rig destroying maneuver ? Or do I have to run out and by an st60vane and head??? Need some straight answers
