Re: Pictures: Oyster releases first images of the new 835 and 895

Sailboats like these is where they make their money, it's where the margins are. Smaller sailboats smaller margins.

I haven't seen any boat reviews for some time now, last review I saw was of an Amel 55 by an English guy.

Edit.

Edit2.
There's another English guy around, but he's not doing reviews really.

You guys remind me of a bunch of private pilots with 1970's Piper's commenting on the new Biz jets
These kind of things, if how much it costs matters, you can't afford it.

Cost always matters except to the ultra rich.

I actually dreamed of being on a deck last night, with no handholds, vast empty spaces and having a feeling of fear and being alone. Weird...

If this had been a standard production boat at a reasonable cost, I can honestly say that the open empty aspect does not appeal to me. I love decks with handholds and this and that for walking through in weather. Much more I would critique however, the boat was designed for a specific market of money and appeal.... it does not appeal to me and I cannot afford it.

One day the young turks with little money will become the older business with money.... so there is a part of the design made for a long term view of customers,,, these are semi hand made boats at this price so the customer can input a lot of suggestions.

If I had a spare £10 million, this would not be a vessel I would consider for that singular aspect... Im sure the interior is gorgeous.

The article implies that the potential to charter was at least part of the design criteria. From that perspective, flush decks with ample lounge space make a lot of sense. Much sexier than a raised cabin when anchored out in the med on a summer day, akin to the 'front porch' on the newer large charter cats.

Looks like as much protection for the cockpit as most center cockpit boats (except aft).... I don't understand the criticism about safety here.

The oysters remind me the days at the beach when the real top model girl walks by and you are thinking... "There goes another one of these I will never have"
The silver lining is that I have a little Contessa 28 that keeps me and my wife happy and safe all the time. And she will always be 28
A perfect sailors threesome I guess....

Well, you should sail on a boat like that, and you'd understand. There is nothing to hold on to or brace against. You are just standing on top of the deck, like standing on top of a tall building. There is no cockpit as such. Nothing whatsoever to stop a wave which makes it over the bow, to sweep you and everyone/everything right overboard. But you'd never sail a vessel like that in any kind of weather -- that's not what it's made for.

It's actually very nice in very calm weather -- you feel like there is less between you and the ocean. But primarily I think the unbroken expanse of flush deck is just a fashion statement a la Wally. An aesthetic device - an almost perfect plane as a mathematical expression.

I especially like the vertical side "windows", takes me right back to 1970's commercial building design....

I assume by anchor launcher they mean a retractable bow roller.

How is there no cockpit? The deck house extends aft creating a tall coaming all around. The helm area is open like most newer aft cockpit boats, but even these have a pretty tall side protecting from waves.
