Nothing New Under the Sun

Advertisement: Streamlined Rod Rigging One of the benefits touted, "Wind resistance approximately 1/3 that of stainless wire of the same strength."

The ad is from the January, 1939 issue of Yachting magazine. The vendor is the Pennsylvania Aircraft Syndicate and the drawings of a Starboat spreader fitting would pass muster today. "Proved during the 1938 racing season on the sensationally successful Star Foo." The text is accompanied by a picture of Foo.. Her sail number was 1550.

I would also note the Star has a fin keel and a skeg-hung rudder.

The old saw really is true: there is nothing new in naval architecture.

Yes, ordinary boats still have wooden hulls and hemp rigging.

Laugh.if you want, but mark my words, if you wait long enough, you will see the rudder rejoin the keel!
