Mizzen Size

I am taking a 52 foot Bermudan Ketch from Baltimore to jJacksonville. I’ve noticed the mizzen is considerably larger than the main. Has anybody sailed a rig like this. The boat is a custom 1964 wooden Giles Laurent design and built in Lymington England

A “mizzen” larger than a “main” makes a schooner, not a ketch. And a two master schooner has a foremast and a mainmast, no mizzen.

It depends! It may be a brigantine

The main is the largest mast whether it is in front of or behind the other mast(s). In a two-master. if it is the forward mast, the aft mast is a mizzen and you have a ketch or yawl. If it is the aft mast, the front mast is the foremast and it may be a schooner or a brigantine depending on the sail. (A brigantine has square sails on the foremast)

It gets more complex with more than two masts

Re: Mizzen Size

52 foot wood. Possibly schooner. We take it is your first passage with this vessel.
Honestly the advice list would be a mile long. Check everything twice.
Please be very careful and may you have a safe voyage.

Re: Mizzen Size

Capt. Bob,
Is this your boat? https://www.luxuryatch.com/1964-laur...rsailer-ketch/
Old site and difficult/near impossible to down the pic gallery, but if I were a betting man would say it's the boat. If so, it is a ketch at 43' LOD, 52' LOA w/a 5' 9" draft.

Did find a Laurent Giles archive site with many of his designs, but didn't have a chance to look at them for this particular one. https://laurentgilesarchive.co.uk/
