Re: Merged- Windigo Abandoned. Please Help

I'm sure that the crew of Windigo made some mistakes... but who here hasn't? I know that I have, but I've been lucky enough that, so far, none of mine have killed me or cost me my boat. Regardless of their mistakes (on and off the water), they do have my sympathy.

Having spent about 12 hours in fairly nasty conditions on the weekend with winds gusting to over 45 knots and short steep seas with some breaking waves, with a lee shore only a handful of miles away, with 3 reefs and storm jib, I am reminded that none of us are immune to fear and none of us are "bullet-proof"... even moving around above and below decks is challenging in those conditions. We had 3 crew who were competent to steer the boat in those sea and wind conditions and were immune to seasickness and another 2 who could make a cup of tea, but even so it was hard work...

Did this boat capsize? The link seem to imply it, but I thought it was upright?

Hi. The boat rolled 360 degrees but they left it floating at the time of rescue. Thanks.

As I recall, floating on its lines with rig intact, and diesel humming along. The usual result for a 360, eh?

Good luck finding her, seems to be some misinformation on the event? I had never heard the 360° roll situation.

Re: Merged- Windigo Abandoned. Please Help

If its a cat how does that work, I just started a thread the other day on capsize with monos, the apparently cats rarely flip, but when they do, they dont come back up. Is this cat ballested or got some fancy gyro system?

RR, this vessel is not a cat, it's mono (a 393 Beneteau)

Ah now its all coming back, the one with a port smashed in the head? Taking on water? With several of this type of thread its hard to keep'em straight. Didnt we see some coast guard or aircraft pics of this one with bimini top and sail cover still on?

I was thinking of the Spirted 380 that was left floating, Nothing wrong with chickening out and wantin to go home, but POSITIVE posts come from truthfull disclosure. This seems more like a nixon watergate thing.

Re: Merged- Windigo Abandoned. Please Help

Hi owners of Windigo,

You have probably received some official notification by now about your boat, but just in case you haven't, she has washed ashore on the ocean beach south of Sawtell (approximately 2nm) on the mid-north coast of NSW, Australia. The location is adjacent to the Bongil Bongil National Park. The yacht has been dismasted and has lost it's keel. The hull is damaged but may be salvagable.

Best wishes,
AndyB5
