Re: Spring Moon abandoned

Not the best start to the season, three or four abandoned so far?

Do you have a link? A Google search reveals much, but nothing about a yacht...

3 abandoned in 5 days. rough seas and bad winds-- sean seems to have been creating mischief even before he was named.

Re: 'Spring Moon' Abandoned

I note that at least one of the particpants was in the NARC rally, which really seems to tolerate (if not through the herd mentaility, encourage) departure from the eastern seaboard in less than ideal conditions. As I recall, as recently as 2009 they departed on a fixed date against the advice of Herb Hilgenberg - and many boats suffered serious breakages, and some crew suffered serious injuries. If memory serves, one of the professional delivery skippers particpating in that event said that Herb was "too conservative" in his forecasts and advice.

I have no idea if a similar situation arose this year, but I seem to recall that the Caribbean 1500 rally delayed its departure this year due to adverse forecasts. I know, every captain is responsible for his, or her own decisions, but....

I think only Elle was with NARC. Not sure how much or what routing is provided so I am not judging what has or hasn't been advised. From NARC Rally Overview. Weather routing has been provided by Susan Genett of Real Weather Susan Genett's Real Weather since the rally began 11 years ago. Susan is based in Newport and is able to give a live presentation before departure. All participants will be given a weather package and Gulf Steam information for route planning.

Re: 'Spring Moon' Abandoned

I appreciate that Sabray, but as I recall the NARC rally was started by professional skippers who were largely transferring Swan yachts to the Caribbean for the winter charter season. I am not calling them cowboys, but I suspect that the decisions that they make are apt to be inappropriate for less experienced sailors who are not under similar time constraints (and who may be sailing lesser vessels). As I say, there tends to be a herd mentaility about jumping off when the going looks 'not too bad'.

I agree with you, however, (and said so in my initial post in this thread), that we don't know and can't say if a similar situation arose this year or not.

I hate to belabor a point but there is currently a Tropical Storm (Sean) SW of Bermuda, forecast to turn to the NE.

Great timing for any rallys!

Sounds like we lost our freight boat "Legacy", off Lynards Cay yesterday. The web cam photos I looked at showed quite a rage.
