Marina recommendations in RI, CN, NY

We're sailing a Canadian-registered 36-ft CS36T down the East Coast and are looking for an affordable, secure, safe marina to leave our boat for 3-4 months this summer. The states of RI, CN and NY (North of NYC) are our target areas. Looking for recommendations... Many thanks!!

I don't think the word affordable is part of the language in those states but guess that term is relative and will depend on what you call affordable. I looked for a place to keep my 42' boat for a summer in RI or CT and everything I found was in the neighborhood of $1000-$1500/month.

Marinas in the north end of Narragansett Bay were some of the cheapest and you might find something better in that area. Coastal CT I doubt you can find anything that approaches reasonable. There might be some places in the remoter parts of Long Island. Maybe look at City Island as well.

I had an idea and checked and this might work. Look at marinas on the far NE tip of Long Island. I checked Orient by the Sea and rates there were less than most of the other places I've checked. Daily rates $1.50/ft. I assume monthly or seasonal would be a lot less. There is a ferry from Orient to CT so you can access the mainland.

Hopefully there are a couple of out of the way marinas some locals will know about. I'll ask my son in law who grew up in RI see if he has any suggestions.

A mooring in Huntington will run you 1800 for the season, including shuttle service. It's late now so maybe they will cut you a break. Try Corey's Marine or Willis both in Huntington harbor.

Captains Cove in Bridgeport have cut me a few longer term deals. Eep. if you do not want el or water. Marina is totally safe ....neighborhood not so much.

Rhode Island is very boat friendly, no sales tax on services. Prices for moorage and slips get more reasonable the further you get away from Newport. There's also Westerly and Point Judith areas in addition to Narragansett

If you can deal with a mooring: no shore power, dinghy (or launch) to the boat, shuttling groceries and water then you can find a much better deal. Also, many of the moorings allow temporary access to a dock for loading passengers and goods, watering, pumpouts, etc. The biggest thing will be no electricity.

If you have solar to keep the batteries topped off then that answers some of the issues.

A word of caution. Orient by the sea is pretty smallish (or at least it was several years ago). Mostly a base for charter fishing boats and mid size power boats. If interested I would call first, not knowing what size/type boat you have. There are quite a few places near there in Greenport, a big town marina but also smaller ones (6-12 boats) run by the people who own houses there in Sterling Harbor. Cheers.

The lower part of the Connecticut River has many marinas. The farther upstream you go the cheaper they get. Essex, CT (about 5 miles upstream from the LI Sound, is popular and very safe... but perhaps a little pricey. Portland CT, another 20 or so miles upstream from Essex, is much cheaper. But if you do decide to venture up the Connecticut River in a deep draft sailboat, watch your charts because there are lots of shallow spots...and go with the tide.
