Re: Listing Starboard

Just a silly thought. I had a 25' boat that had water ballast tanks years ago....does this Morgan have them?

That wouldn't cause a list, though, assuming the bilge is centered on the boat, along the keel line. It would just make the boat settle evenly in the water. You're unbalanced. Something is weighing down the boat on the starboard side.

Full holding tank? Stowage in lockers? Boom swung over? Ought not to be too hard to spot.
Yes, I agree. The leak to the bilge needs to be fixed and is a different issue than the list.

Holding tank empty and is centered on the boat (as are the water and fuel tanks). The list began while motoring, and literally nothing in the boat changed. Cargo didn't move, no water, holding or fuel tank changes (minus what fuel was consumed during the outing).

I'm in the process of offloading cargo now - mostly so I can get better access to the stern to see the leak - but also to watch for any changes to the balance of the boat.

Thank you!

Not that I can find, either by looking or reviewing the specs.

Re: Listing Starboard

Update - the unrelated leak at the stern is coming from the hose connecting the shaft to the stuffing box. Found a broken hose clamp and evidence of deterioration on the hose itself. Since I am a novice, and the space is cramped, I will be talking to the boatyard on Monday to schedule a time to get the boat out of the water!

The list persists! Now that I found the sidetracking, albeit serious, leak I will get back to offloading cargo in an attempt to fix the list!

Thanks to all!

Re: Listing Starboard

Update:
I’ve tried to attach a photo to show the list. (Can’t seem to make it rightside up.)
Cargo off loading has made no difference.
Boat to be hauled sometime this week.
I’ll let you know more when I know more!

Re: Listing Starboard

When you have it out replacing the stuffing box hose etc, look close at the prop shaft in the packing area. They can often be corroded there, which tears up the packing and causes stress on the hose too. Especially if the boat sat a lot without use at one time. Sometimes it's so bad it looks like worms eating wood!

Listing Starboard

Just something from somebody who knows nothing about your boat model. What type of keel does it have? Bolt-on or incapsulated? Is there any ingress around your keel bolts. I have seen a boat with a bolt-on lead keel where the bolts were failing and the keel was sitting at an slight angle, resulting in the boat heeling similar to what you mention.

Which side are you batteries located? Also check the mast, is it in column?

Re: Listing Starboard

Are you sure the list wasent there before.. is it possible that it was masked by how the boat was loaded before you left the dock?
Do you remember moving anything heavy before the sail?
I'm just wondering if its water intrusion into the boats hull or deck or cabin core (if it has one)..

-or-

For sure the holding tank was empty before going out? I know you said no fluid changes and a midline holding tank....just a thought.
