How to buy a small (14') sailboat?

Look for a locally produced boat and you'll be much happier with the ease of finding parts and pieces.
Your area has a gazillion Capris, Lidos and things made by Catalina. Go to your local sailing clubs and find out what they are sailing. They, no doubt, got them cheaply from a local dealer or manufacturer.
Don't make up your mind about a Hunter until you've exhausted all other possibilities.

Sorry I was misunderstood. I meant I can't find a Hunter, so it is good to have other choices.
I see lots of Lidos and Capris on craiglist, thanks.

Sorry for the misunderstanding. Lidos and Capris would be a good choice. The reason I mentioned that you might want to get what the local clubs have is that if you decide to start racing then you'll have a boat that will fit into their regattas plus the advantage of buying very good used sails and running rigging that has only been used for one season by fanatical racers.

As SkiprJohn said, Lidos and Capris will be good choices. In fact, I'll just say "ditto" to his whole post. Very good advice there.
