Galveston Vagabond 47 on Ebay

I spotted this boat when it was at $1, no reserve. One week auction.

USauctions.com - Item Description: #9526: 1984 47' Vagabond 47 Ketch Sailboat

It appears to be available due to a medevac of the crew from the GOM. All damage seems to be a result of the salvage operation. Otherwise, she looks like a very well kept vessel.

Probably a prize for the boatsmiths (not me)

The bidding is moving quickly.

Check it out!

Hi, I bought the Vagabond 47 that was on EBay. If it all pans out I will take possession tomorrow, march 24. Right now it is sight unseen. If it is not as advertised I can turn it down. I'll let you know how it goes. Yachtsman2

what could be a deal-breaker on the acquisition of a more than 150,000usd boat that is being bought for nothing...lemme see.......i do not see one....goood luck and have fun. it mebbe could be market value only 40k usd, but the replacement cost is over 150,000-200,000usd on those...

What does replacement cost have to do with market value?

Re: Galveston Vagabond 47 on Ebay

The boat was abandoned at sea when one of the two owners had a heart attack. The boat drifted for 11 days until the "salvage" boat claimed her. The salvage boat did alot of damage to her. She had been rebuilt very lovingly just before leaving. The interior should be fine. She is not currently in seaworthy shape. Rigging will need to be fixed, the cables themselves are probably fine, but much damage to the boat at the chainplates. Depending what you paid, could easily have been worth it.

Hi Zee,

If Yachtsman2 was the high-bidder, about $81K won the prize. A beautiful yacht. I hope it gives him much pleasure.

Re: Galveston Vagabond 47 on Ebay

Hi all,

The name of the boat is "Paradise". I got to see her for the first time yesterday, I stayed on board last night. The A/C worked fine.

I'm pleased to say that the boat is as it was described on EBay (see #9526 1984 47' Vagabond 47 Ketch Sailboat in Sailboats | eBay Motors).

Most systems are functioning but need TLC. There are a few leaks in the deck and cap rails. Nothing that can't be fixed, but like all things, it takes time. Chain plates seem to be OK, and I think the bowsprit will be ok when the port whisker stay is re-attached.

Right now it's a matter of hoisting the rags and checking the lines. She's been sitting a long time. I haven't fired up the engine or generator yet, that's todays project.

I'm hoping to have her sailable by the end of the week and head back to Florida this coming weekend.

I thank you for well wishes. Paul

The water tanks on those 47s tend to rust out and the bowsprits rot. Watch for that.

Re: Galveston Vagabond 47 on Ebay

Apparently the bowsprit was re-built in 2011. I have the 2011 survey, it all looked good at that time.

I hoisted the rags; there was a reef in the mizzen, and a double reef in the main. The main is blown out on the leach about 10 feet down from the headboard. I guess these folks got into trouble before they called the Coast Guard and got Medevaced off.

I got the main off yesterday, bagged it and got it into the car for the sail loft (,I have to remind myself, I'm too old for this, I can no longer do what I used to do). The sail looks like it was relatively new, fully battened, loose foot, drops in a bag with lazy-jacks. Not my first choice for a main.

Tried to get the anchor chain and rode out of the locker. There's a spare head stay in there, all tangled up, would never be able to drop a hook in an emergency. I'm sure there are more surprises to come.

Change the filters and flush that Spectra watermaker right away. There's 12K of your 81k investment right there. The A-36 means it's probably brand new. Let me know if you need any help with it.

Salt water on the decks daily for a week or two will help with the leaks. I do it in the evening so it has time to soak in.
