Thanks Steve, owner said it would do 45 degrees true, but only 5 knots, not 6.8 knots, as he was doing at 60 degrees, made a 100nmile passage in 20 hrs with a 3 hours of no wind, rest a easterly on the port quarter.
Yes, the solent stay eliminates the need for a running back stay.
Looking forward to meeting the 28 year old cooks, lots of them here at Patong beach!?
Fair winds from Keith.............

If you pinch up you will certainly lose speed, sailing free will give you a more pleasurable sail and if the distance to be sailed is considerable, doing long tacks wont make much difference to the time under sail. But if it is a short run and you aren't over canvassed you will arrive in about the same time sailing close to the wind.
6.8 knots is getting close to hull speed on my boat and is only achieved with eased sheets, not to say that I haven't seen 8 or even 9 at times with the main board up and the aft board 1/2 way down (rather like a large surf board) but not sustained for any length of time. What is the average wind strength at Patong? I can't imagine it is very high.
"most" 28 year old cooks want a house in the long run!

Ahoy steve, been pretty windy here, still NE, a little rain, coolish, wind about 12 to 25 knots out on the water. blows fairly steadily offshore here on the west coast of thailand, still affected by the diurnal winds, can get some severe squalls coming down off of the hills in the late arvo and just after susnset, blinding rain and 40 + knots.
Thanks for the advice about reducing sail and sailing close to the wind.
Yeh, the old hairy lassoo?

Apparently she is 15mm alloy on the keel, 7mm on the bilge, 5 and 6 mm on the deck, with welded mounts for all sea cocks.

I think the keel base on mine is around 8mm, the rest is 5mm, I had an ultra sound done before we bought her and it was still 5mm. The only pitting was on the rudder which had been isolated from the hull and didn't have its own zinc. What I like is that she has 1m draft with the main centre board up and the keel is 700mm wide at the widest point meaning that she will sit quite happily on her bottom for scrubbing, cleaning the prop etc.
Have you bought her yet?

Ahoy Steve, not yet, been chasing him all over the Andaman Sea. Spent 6 hrs on the boat today and will do a test sail tomorrow.
Then we can set a contract and haul her and see what needs doing.
He is sitting firm on 110,000 euro!!!
It appears to be in great shape, very impressive anchoring systems, sails, rigging, electrics, electronics and tankage and great fit out and accommodation in 2 doubles and 1 single crew cabin.
See how she goes tomorow, good 15 knots winds today.
Cheers mate.

Sounds good, especially if it comes up to snuff when you have her surveyed (ultrasound most important) I guess he can see that you are falling in love with her so will hold his price.
It is quite a bit above what he could expect to get down here in NZ, as it is a buyers market. the seller who havn't got finance pressures are staying firm with their prices, the others that owe the bank will take whatever they can get.
Curiousity question, why is he selling?

It is worth whatever you are prepared to pay. Most sellers allow some room for bargaining, they know its pitfalls and any problems it may have. It takes a really good survey / inspection to find out possibly even 1/2 of what he knows.
I spent 3 months negotiating and reinspecting my current boat and so wasn't completely blindsided. There were still a few unknowns that popped up, nothing major though. We bought her for roughly 1/2 of the asking price, which was realistically what she was worth. How you negotiate depends on your nature, if you are falling in love, he will see this and hold firm accordingly. If you are prepared to make an offer and be able to walk away and allow him to make a counter offer without chasing him up, he may come down. Also depends on how many "real" buyers there are after it. You may be the only one. A mate has recently sold a 38 footer that was in very good condition, after 6 months sitting in a brokers yard at x dollars per month he was prepared to take the next offer that came along, he took a hit of many thousands of dollars, But that was the only buyer with some money in his pocket who wanted that type of boat at that time. A bird in the hand is better than a bird in the bush etc.
As rule of thumb most sellers are negotiable up to 20% if they realistically want to sell and aren't hoping to finance a bigger and better yacht "if" they can only pull this high priced sale off. Some don't really want to sell, only if they can make a financial killing.
That all being said all the other Skorpions up to 14m currently on the market all are steel and range from EUR95.000 up to EUR 217.000.
Why is he Selling??

Hi steve, made an offer 25K euro below the asking price and he nearly threw me off the boat! But then said he would sleep on it, if I attended to all the repair list, nothing major at present.
Sails beautifully and handles well under motor in forward and reverse, anchor sytem is great!

He is selling to go home and look after a sick father in Germany, but then he may come back in November if he gets better and buy a cat!? who really knows, but seems very genuine?
We will meet again tomorrow to see what we can work out.
He really doesn't want to budge, but I am prepared to walk away!
Cheers from a sunburnt Keith.

Stick to your guns and she'll be yours, don't forget the survey though.
We are going sailing so will be out of touch for a while.
Good Luck.

He obviously wants/needs money for his cat

Feltz boats are a classic steel/aluminium design and highly regarded in Germany.

The market has been absolutely awful, I got my boat 50% below asking price as well following 2 years of looking at it and corresponding with the broker..

Cash is king, its like dating in a way, torture them a bit by pretending you're not interested, put in a low offer, wait for them to get back to you etc

Good luck

Wel, you know how it goes. I have bought the dammed thing! 90,000 euro, a big discount off the asking price, but I fix all the declared defects! Take delivery in 3 weeks on the hard stand at Kuah, Langkawi.
Back off to Margaret river today to collect the surf boards and all my gear, organise the money and come back and go sailing again!!
Whooeeeee!!!?
I had booked flights to Bali to buy the Ganley 40', so I told him I had given up on it, then he contacts me 2 days before I fly and says I can have it at my first offer, which was soundly refused 3 times!?
His girlfriend is off me!
Had a good test sail and in water survey, out of water survey to be completed before delivey of the funds, minus the 10% deposit.
Fair winds from Keith.............
