Why are they so affordable? The ones here on the west coast are selling between 35-45K and look (from photos) like they're in good condition.

I think they are not well known. The were built for a short span of years and the modern way of thinking os to sacrifice stability for flash and speed.

Re: Downeaster 38

Mine is the big brother to the 38, the DE45. I’ve had it ten years and altered it to what I want, not because I had to, (for the most part anyway), but because I wanted to.
This included changing the rig from a ketch to a schooner and replacing the bowsprit with an aluminum one, which is stronger and lighter than any wooden sprit.
You can read about my extensive alterations at HOME

Hi!
Wondering if you might have a lead on boom covers for the D38? I’m located in middle Baja, MX and there’s no canvas shops around. Hoping there might be a standard boom cover available.

Thanks

Re: Downeaster 38

Greetings!

Would you happen to know the dimensions of the DE38 mainsail boom cover?

As a start:

Cutter’s foot length is 16.8
Sloop’s foot length is 15.8

According to info online. But any sailmaker will know too. You don’t have the old cover?
