Columbia 27 Cabin query

Hi all,

I'm considering decommissioning my Columbia 27 and putting it on land as a guest cabin. Does anyone have any experience/advice on this?

I'm wondering if better to dig it into the ground or chock it above ground (except keel)?

Any other thoughts welcome. Thank you

"Off the top of my head"...

Make sure local codes will allow you to do this.

Assume this will not have plumbing? I.e no running water and maybe a composting head?

Assuming you will partially bury the hull for easy accessibility, how high is your water table and what are your soil conditions? If you bury it, and the water collects around it, it's going to want to float. Frost may also be an issue, and can also force the boat back out of the ground. You will also have to consider drainage and plug all the thruhulls, or water may leach back into the boat.

Re: Columbia 27 Cabin query

If it was me I'd probably build a wood frame around it and fill it with gravel to support the hull. Remove the keel first, right?

Re: Columbia 27 Cabin query

Thank you both for great suggestions. Was thinking partial burial. No frost in area. Not sure re water table, will consider. I imagine 2.8T would keep it down. Maybe chemical or composting toilet, or none.. not sure yet. No water connected. Will plug thru holes. Hadn't considered removing fixed keel.. will find out more about this. Don't even want to ask council! They won't even have a rule for this and prob just make one up 🤪
